A ballast regulator works on the BNSF Brush Sub while a bulldozer pours out some ballast on the Market Street turnout, which was replaced along with the diamond. The work was done on a Sunday as a BNSF switch job works on the industries that the turnout accesses the rest of the week.

BNSF put in place a substantial track curfew at Sand Creek so the diamond could be replaced. It was indeed replaced earlier in the day, and crews are now working to place fresh ballast to complete the work. The curfew actually necessitated the morning Zephyr being delayed by four hours, so it departed Chicago the day before four hours late, running at #1005 (instead of #5), with the entire schedule being delayed by four hours.

As a bulldozer dumps ballast along UP's Greeley Sub at the diamond at Sand Creek, two ballast regulators wait to smooth out the ballast. The regulator on the left is on BNSF's Brush Sub. The regulator on the right is on UP's Greeley Sub. You can also see a track tamper on the far side on the Brush Sub.

BNSF and Union Pacific are working together to replace the diamond at Sand Creek, located underneath I-270. You can see a bulldozer bringing in some more ballast, while ballast regulators sit on the BNSF Brush Sub (center track) and UP Greeley Sub (right track).

On a beautiful Sunday morning, a trio of GEs leads UP's MNYGR north on the Greeley Sub. The train is crossing over Sand Creek while approach the diamond with BNSF's Brush Sub at a control point that, appropriately, is also named Sand Creek.

After meeting a very short southbound, UP's MNYGR is throttling up and headed for the single track main of the Greeley Sub. The train is passing by the Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City.

While I was very sad when MRL (Montana Rail Link) ceased to exist at the start of 2024 after BNSF took it over, the one possible benefit is that all the MRL power is now owned by BNSF. And, as a result, MRL units are now roaming BNSF's system, offering greater opportunities to get shots of units outside of Montana. Such is the case here as an MRL SD70ACe is the second unit on an eastbound coal empty headed for the Powder River Basin.

Something of a rare pair of units lead an eastbound coal empty on the siding at Irondale. A Heritage AC4400CW and an MRL SD70ACe are the power today. Interestingly, the SD70ACe (and possibly the AC4400CW) were put on the train in Denver. Not sure if the power was swapped out, or simply needed servicing before continuing east.

After a westbound coal load overtook this Lincoln, NE to Denver, CO manifest at Tonville, the manifest got its turn to continue east toward Denver. The train is slowing as it has an Approach (yellow) signal at the east end of Irondale. It will be meeting an eastbound coal empty there.

While the plains are, obviously, significantly flatter than the mountain, that is not to suggest that they are entirely flat. As you can see here, there is a hill east of Denver on the Brush Sub that this westbound coal load has just climbed over. This train was loaded at the Rawhide coal mine in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and is headed for Smithers, TX.

Some fall colors are present along Sand Creek as UP's Big Boy (4014) departs north on the Greeley Sub. The train is completing the final leg of the two month "Heartland Tour" that visited ten states. Today, the trip to Cheyenne will complete the tour. Several folks are gathered to capture the scene.

UP 6230 leads an ES44AC and an SD70ACe across the diamond at Sand Creek as it crosses over the diamonds namesake (Sand Creek). UP 6230 was delivered in May 1995 as SP 150. The train is also passing by the Suncor oil refineries. There are technically two refineries on the property, capable of processing close to 100,000 barrels of oil each day.

A trio of elephant-style units provide the sole power on a long manifest that consists mainly of covered hoppers. No DPUs on the train today, suggesting the train probably consists of empties more so than loads. The train is passing through the Suncor oil refinery on its way north on the Greeley sub.

A UP manifest, with a very long string of covered hoppers, passes a diverging clear signal at Sand Creek (CP W005), moving from the Inbound Lead to the main track. The train was assembled in North Yard and will head north on the Greeley Sub to Speer, WY before turning west to head to Green River, WY.
