While I was very sad when MRL (Montana Rail Link) ceased to exist at the start of 2024 after BNSF took it over, the one possible benefit is that all the MRL power is now owned by BNSF. And, as a result, MRL units are now roaming BNSF's system, offering greater opportunities to get shots of units outside of Montana. Such is the case here as an MRL SD70ACe is the second unit on an eastbound coal empty headed for the Powder River Basin.

Something of a rare pair of units lead an eastbound coal empty on the siding at Irondale. A Heritage AC4400CW and an MRL SD70ACe are the power today. Interestingly, the SD70ACe (and possibly the AC4400CW) were put on the train in Denver. Not sure if the power was swapped out, or simply needed servicing before continuing east.

After a westbound coal load overtook this Lincoln, NE to Denver, CO manifest at Tonville, the manifest got its turn to continue east toward Denver. The train is slowing as it has an Approach (yellow) signal at the east end of Irondale. It will be meeting an eastbound coal empty there.

While the plains are, obviously, significantly flatter than the mountain, that is not to suggest that they are entirely flat. As you can see here, there is a hill east of Denver on the Brush Sub that this westbound coal load has just climbed over. This train was loaded at the Rawhide coal mine in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and is headed for Smithers, TX.

Some fall colors are present along Sand Creek as UP's Big Boy (4014) departs north on the Greeley Sub. The train is completing the final leg of the two month "Heartland Tour" that visited ten states. Today, the trip to Cheyenne will complete the tour. Several folks are gathered to capture the scene.

UP 6230 leads an ES44AC and an SD70ACe across the diamond at Sand Creek as it crosses over the diamonds namesake (Sand Creek). UP 6230 was delivered in May 1995 as SP 150. The train is also passing by the Suncor oil refineries. There are technically two refineries on the property, capable of processing close to 100,000 barrels of oil each day.

A trio of elephant-style units provide the sole power on a long manifest that consists mainly of covered hoppers. No DPUs on the train today, suggesting the train probably consists of empties more so than loads. The train is passing through the Suncor oil refinery on its way north on the Greeley sub.

A UP manifest, with a very long string of covered hoppers, passes a diverging clear signal at Sand Creek (CP W005), moving from the Inbound Lead to the main track. The train was assembled in North Yard and will head north on the Greeley Sub to Speer, WY before turning west to head to Green River, WY.

At the Belt Line Connection, this manifest makes the turn from the Belt Line to the Greeley Sub. The train is the daily MNYGR, running from North Yard to Green River, WY. Many of the cars will then be forwarded on to Salt Lake City. The train is about to pass by the Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City as it approach Sand Creek Jct.

This southbound intermodal train is passing underneath I-270 and crossing over BNSF's Brush Sub at Sand Creek Jct. Indeed, the train is crossing the junction's namesake, Sand Creek, on its way south. The train is actually quite short, as you can clearly see the end of the train on the right side of the frame.

A southbound UP intermodal train approaches the diamond that crosses BNSF's Brush Sub at Sand Creek. An ET44AC and an AC4400CW are power for this relatively short train. There are plenty of puddles in the area after several inches of rail fell through the area the night before.

UP 5872 has recently been rebuilt by UP from an C44AC-CTE to a C44ACM (UP's designation). In the world of expensive Tier-4 compliant units from EMD and GE (Wabtec), most railroads are starting to focus money on rebuilds rather than new planes. After the rebuild, UP 5872 also got the latest UP paint scheme, moving the American flag from the long hood to the nose, and removing the wings from the front of the nose entirely.

Just south of Rolla, a northbound UP manifest approaches the grade crossing at 96th Avenue. It appears that the yard crew at North Yard blocked the train quite nicely for its trip to Green River, WY. There, the train will likely be broken up (to some extent) before cars continue on to their final destinations.

The long days of summer are great for having plenty of daylight to try to find trains, but the sun resting almost directly straight up in the sky results in short shadows. Black and white, with a bit of a contrast bump, actually can be quite helpful. Note the Denver skyline in the distance and the Rocky Mountains even further off in the distance as a northbound UP manifest approaches.

BNSF's Denver, CO to Lincoln, NE manifest has just cleared the west switch of Irondale. The headlights on the Chicago, IL to Denver, CO Z-train are back on bright, ready to roll west the rest of the way in to the yard.
