For all the orange units (be it H1, H2 or New Image) that BNSF has on their roster, there are still a fair number of non-orange units to be found on the Joint Line! Here, an SD70MAC and a CEFX AC4400CW leaser unit bring up the rear of a south bound coal load just starting the journey down the Joint Line.

Yard Shots EMD Leasing
Hostlers sit in EMDX 9028 waiting to take it and CEFX 6020 to their train in the yard. The two SD60s will provide the power for the HDENKCK-13. The train will depart south on the Joint Line and then turn east to head to Kansas City.

With a fresh crew on board, this coal empty is leaving from "Coal 2" at 31st Street. The train has a total of nine units (seven on the point and two on the rear), but only the first three on the head end (and the two on the end) are actually loading.

Just west (geographically north) of Fox Junction, Amtrak 5 is running on a clear signal. Even though the consist is typical for the Zephyr, it is running with an extra P42DC on this particular morning.

Yard Shots BNSF
It seems that BNSF has been running more AC4400CW units on coal train these days. Case-in-point is this southbound coal load just getting ready to leave the yard in Denver and head for the Joint Line. They only have 111 such units on the roster, but they have spending a lot of time on PRB coal trains!

The northbound Longmont Turn has just received its warrant from the Front Range dispatcher and is beginning its journey just south of Pecos. Even though BNSF 7147 is the lead unit back north, the warrant was still issued to BNSF 7812, the second unit.

A last look for me at the HPASSAG as it is approaching Utah Junction in Denver. The train is about to pass underneath the relative new Belt-Bypass, built by UP a few years earlier. The two Alaska Railroad GP49's on the train are running dead, headed for their new home in Houston, TX working for Specialized Rail Transport.

When EMD was working on their 50-series locomotives in the late 1970's and early 1980's, they had four models they offered. The GP49, the SD49, the GP50 and the SD50. The 49's were only 12-cylinder models and were rated at 2,800 HP. Alaska Railroad purchased nine GP49's (the only nine units to ever be produced), and EMD never did end up producing any SD49's. Here is one of the nine GP49's running DIC (Dead-In-Consist) on BNSF's HPASSAG. The unit was retired in 2006 and is now headed for Houston, TX.

Coming toward the end of the journey down the Front Range Sub, this HPASSAG (Pasco, WA to Saginaw, TX) train is slowly crossing over Pecos Street just outside Utah Junction. The last two units are Alaska Railroad GP49's, being transported by BNSF to their new owner in Houston, TX.

A roster shot of DRGW 5371 in good lighting as it heads east (and then north) with the MNYNP-08. Interesting that 5371 would be the final Rio Grande unit left in the world, after 5771 (a single-digit difference!) was the final F9A to be retired off the roster 24 years prior in 1984.

A shot that is all but guaranteed never to be repeated again. The last-remaining (unpatched) Rio Grande unit on UP's roster crosses over the bridge (still lettered for Rio Grande) at York Street on the Belt Industrial Lead. 5371 is headed toward Cheyenne, more than likely to be retired.

After an hour wait sitting on the Belt Industrial Lead, the northbound MNYNP-08 is finally heading out of town with DRGW 5371 in tow. This is a shot looking in between two buildings near the control point at Broadway. Even though the buildings obscure a lot of the engine, there is no armour yellow in the shot! Kinda takes you back to when this was the view along the Belt Line every day...

A detailed shot of the tunnel motor radiator intakes and the "class doors" located just above. And of course, the single most important thing in this picture ... the Grande Gold 5371 that has not been (and will not be) patched!

Looking to get a lower-angled roster shot, my dad - the man responsible for my sickness that is a train lover - sits alongside my youngest daughter Jaina. At 2 1/2, she loves going out to watch the train with us!
