UP 844 and train are in town for the first passenger special run on the Joint Line in 10 years! The summer of 1997 was the last run, with UP 844 in fact! In that year, the special turned west at Pueblo to head over Tennessee Pass. This run will turn around in Pueblo (for the Colorado State Fair) and return to Denver on the Joint Line.

An eastbound coal load passes through the crossover at Pecos Street. The coal train, on Bypass 2, is approaching the grade crossing at Pecos, no doubt preparing to frustrate dozens of drivers on Pecos as the crossing is blocked!

UP's South Local sits patiently waiting on UP's Main track leading from Prospect Junction to 20th Street. The local is staring down a red signal (where ownership of the track also switches from UP to BNSF) as the Brush Sub dispatcher has already cleared a BNSF manifest to come out of 31st Street and head south.

In the 70's and 80's, you could always count on Union Pacific for a unique power combination. A GP30 followed by a DD35B followed by an SD24, or some such lashup. Today, unique power is harder to come by. However, this GP40-2/GP60/GP38-2/GP38-2 lashup isn't too bad! UP's Roydale Local is getting ready for a full day of switching.

Just east of Dahlia Street, BNSF's industrial lead for the area curves around to the north. Eventually, it curves to the west and the to the south, connecting with itself to make one giant loop. Industries can be served off the loop. A BNSF GP15-1 got the call today for the Market Street Local.

Near the 4700 (N) block of Dahlia street, we see BNSF's Market Street Local switching some boxcars around for some of the industries in the area. This part of is still very active when it comes to trains and locals and businesses that depend on trains for shipping or receiving their goods!

Just west of Colorado Blvd, BNSF tracks cross over former Denver Rock Island (now Union Pacific) tracks. The line above originates to the north (right) at Sand Creek off BNSF's Brush Sub. It is an industrial lead track that services several industries northeast of I-70 and Colorado Blvd. The lower track was once the CRIP's (Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific) line into town to connect with the Rio Grande's Belt Line. In the future, Union Pacific has plans to add a second track and send coal traffic to the Limon Sub via the CRIP!

Sometimes the rain can be a pain when you are working to get some pictures of trains. Sometimes, on the other hand, it can really work to your advantage! There have been quite a few afternoon thunderstorms in the Denver area the last week or two, and the water is building up in places. Such is the case just west of Ulster Street as this loaded coal train heads east (away from the camera) for the KP line.

Looking west from Ivy Street, you can see the end of the line for this little switcher just east of Holly Street. The switcher is taking a few cars to an industry out here before the switcher starts to head back east.

Denver Rock Island NW2 #996 is busy switching industries on this Friday afternoon in eastern Denver. The switcher crosses west (to the right) over Ivy Street just north of I-70. The NW2 started life as Frisco 259 before turning into Burlington Northern 419. After its life on the BN, it was repainted and wound up in the hands of the DRIR!

The Denver and Rock Island Railroad is definitely the definition of a shortline railroad! The railroad has two switchers (an SW1500 and an NW2) and about three miles of track to its name! However, there are a lot of industries to switch on those three miles. Here, DRIR NW2 #996 switches some cars at Monaco Street, just north of I-70.

Here is an interesting lashup for ya! On one hand we have a newly revamped GP38-2 wearing a fresh coat of blue and white GATX leasing paint. On the other hand, we have a nearly pristine (former) Cotton Belt GP40-2. Gray and blue, what do you think? These units are just one set of switchers based out of Roydale on UP's Limon Subdivision.

There aren't a lot of GP35's left in the world, particularly on Class 1 railroads. Indeed, these were some of the first units to fall of Rio Grande's roster toward the end of its life in the mid-to-late 1980's. A fair number, however, have survived to continue in switching service on BNSF's roster.

Yard Shots EMD Leasing
The paint scheme applied to the demo GP60s and SD60s that EMD produced has always been one of my favorites. A very close second (seeing as how it is almost identical) is the scheme worn by the 100 leaser units from Oakway. I'm a sucker for a shot of one of these SD60s anytime!
