This westbound oil train was tied down in the east siding at Bond for about two hours while waiting for a relief crew from Yampa. After meeting the eastbound Zephyr at the west end of Bond, the empty train has clear (green) signals for the foreseeable future as there are no other eastbounds nearby. The train is wrapping around one of the many curves along the Colorado River, currently between Bond and Dell.

The Dotsero Cutoff is one of the newest stretches of significant mainline in Colorado. "Newest", in this case, is relative as the cutoff was completed in June 1934. The cutoff created a vital connection between Denver and Salt Lake City, eliminating the need for trains from Denver to run south to Pueblo and west over Tennessee Pass. 175 miles were cut out of the old route. Here, the eastbound Zephyr winds along the Colorado River near the east end of the cutoff under dramatic skies.

Over the course of the (roughly) 36 miles of the Dotsero Cutoff between West Bond and Dotsero, there are two siding for meets. When heading west, the first siding is Dell, which is located a canyon not directly visible from Colorado River Road. The east end half of the 7,430 foot long siding is straight, while the west half is on a sweeping curve. The westbound Zephyr, with Phase 7 AMTK 167 in the second position, moves toward a clear (green) signal at the west end of Dell.

The Zephyr knocks down a clear (green) signal at the west end of Yarmony. This is one of the newer sidings on the Moffat. The siding of Yarmony has existed for many decades. However, it was a relatively short siding (less than 5,000 feet) that UP rarely used after the SP merger. Which is why, when a derailment at the west switch occurred, UP did not reconnect the siding! The switch was completely gone. After nearly a decade, UP finally invested the money to relocate the east end of the siding just west of a grade crossing, and extend the siding to the west, creating the 7,760 foot siding that it is today.

When both Zephyrs are running on time, it is quite common for them to meet at the siding of Range on the Dotsero Cutoff. On this November day, both Zephyrs were actually running about 90 minutes late, leading to the same result of a meet at Range. The meet was very well timed and turned out to be a "rolling meet". Neither Zephyr had to come to a stop.

Rolling west on the main at Yarmony, passengers on the Zephyr likely are enjoying the colorful shrubs along the banks of the Colorado River. The siding of Yarmony has changed a lot in the last two decades. It used to be one of the shortest sidings between Denver and Bond. A derailment in the early 2000s took out the west switch of the siding. And UP left the west switch out of service for years afterward, until finally extending the siding to the west and moving the east switch to the west as well. The result is now one of the longer siding with concrete ties throughout.
