The Rocky Mountaineer has slowed to about 20 MPH as it enters the siding at Fruita. There is a BNSF oil train tied down on the main track, necessitating all trains coming through to run through the siding.

The lighting wasn't fantastic as the train was pointed directly into the sun, but you cannot pass up the chance for a quick roster shot of a Kansas City Southern Belle. Especially considering this paint scheme will be disappearing in the coming years with Kansas City Southern and Canadian Pacific merging to form CPKC.

Due to circumstances that I was never able to find out, this eastbound BNSF loaded oil train is actually tied down on the main track at Fruita! No crew is aboard and, as of this shot, no crew had yet been called to come and get on the train to free up the main track.

Its journey across the desert complete, the eastbound California Zephyr is now approaching Grand Junction where it will receive a fresh crew (engineer and conductor) for the trip to Denver.

The Landmark Local has a clear signal to continue west out of Fruita and a very clear track ahead! The local sometime heads out into the Utah Desert as far as Cisco, but on this Tuesday, its switching duties won't take it further then Mack, CO.

This GP40-2 is without a doubt my personal favorite on Union Pacific's roster. Why? It was the very first Rio Grande unit (GP40-2 or otherwise) to be patched and added to UP's roster. UP 5234 started life as DRGW 3122. In 1997, the unit was given a patch and renumbered to UP 5245. Here, ten years later, the unit still retains the same number and leads the Landmark Local west through Fruita on its way to Mack for some switching.
