Back in August, the Colorado Railroad Museum moved DRGW 5401 from storage at Coors Brewery to the museum property. When it was moved, it had been patched and held a UP number. The folks at the museum worked quickly and did a fantastic job restoring the number on the engineer's side of the cab, as well as the number boards! So great having 5401 at its forever home to be preserved for years to come.

This scene might look mighty dangerous at first glance, but in reality it is not. The Golden Switch is making a reverse move (away from the grade crossing) to spot a string of cars. The train just clear the crossing and the conductor waves cars across.

The Golden Switch pulls in to the upper yard in Golden with a string of cars. Once the train clears the grade crossing, the train will make a reverse move to spot the cars on another track. In another week, shots of the switch at the end of the day will likely not be possible as the sun will already be set with the end of Daylight Savings Time.

Generally speaking, the Golden Switch typically has a pair of six-axle units as it does its work throughout the day. However, on this particular Thursday, the switch has a GP39-2 along with an SD40-2. The train is crossing 44th Avenue (which will turn in to 10th Street a few blocks to the east) in Golden.

Reaching the end of their work day, a BNSF crew is about to wrap up their day as the Golden Switch gets ready to enter the upper yard in Golden.

Once last shot of DRGW 5401 as it comes to the end of the panel track and Hulcher Service cranes lift the unit to move it over to museum rails. After this, the unit moved behind trees that obscured the view, so it was time to call it quits and head for home. A great day and a lot of fun to witness a very rare move.

Once DRGW 5401 has been spotted at its new home in the Colorado Railroad Museum, the museum plans to remove the UP patches and restore the paint. In addition, the ditch lights will be removed and the gyralight will be reinstalled in the nose! Eventually, the unit will rest near the entrance to the museum, its lights lit up to welcome guests to the museum.

A small hole in the trees from Easley Road (north of the museum) revealed a very decent shot of DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) as crews work to bring it in through the gates. The Tunnel Motor is reaching the north end of the (temporary) panel track, and the Hulcher Service cranes are moving in to position to lift the unit up once more in order to spot it on the museum track.

DRGW 5401 is almost through the gates of the Colorado Railroad Museum. Took the opportunity to grab a shot of a "Rough Road" sign that the City of Golden put up 5 minutes before I took this picture. Moving a near 200-ton engine isn't exactly kind to an asphalt road. Drivers along 44th Avenue will experience some bumps for a couple of days.

Such a cool view looking right down 44th Avenue at the side of a Rio Grande SD40T-2. The color and Grande Gold and the color of the center stripes on 44th Avenue is a mighty close match!

Hulcher Service cranes lift the back of DRGW 5401 up high enough to ensure that the trucks will clear the temporary panel track laid across 44th Avenue. Once over the panel track, the cranes will lower back of the Tunnel Motor down to the rails.

With the panel track secure and a tractor hooked up to the front of DRGW 5401, the nearly 200-ton diesel-electric engine is slowly rolled north across 44th Avenue. At this point, two Hulcher Service cranes are still support the back end of the unit off the ground. Once the back end is over the panel track, they will lower it to the rails.

Now how is that for a site! DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) sits on temporary panel track that is just laying across 44th Avenue leading in to the Colorado Railroad Museum. Absolutely thrilled that this Tunnel Motor will be preserved.

A wider angle shot looking down 44th Avenue east from Easley Way. In addition to crews from the museum and moving crews, several local news crews are on the scene. Xcel Energy is also present to ensure no power lines are in the way of the cranes during the massive move.
