In order to get DRGW 5401 in to the Colorado Railroad Museum, crews had to make a 90° turn off 44th Avenue. Here, crews are starting to make the turn in to a dirt parking lot on the south side of the road.

As Hulcher Services works to transport DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) west on 44th Avenue, it was not only incredible seeing it suspended off the ground, but it was amazing see it lightly rock back and forth as the cranes slowly rolled down the road. A few shrubs got a bit of a beating on the right side of the road!

Definitely something you do not see every day! A nearly 200-ton SD40T-2 being suspended in mid air by four cranes, slowly rolling west down 44th Avenue! Crews are working to get the old Tunnel Motor on to the property of the Colorado Railroad Museum.

Four cranes from Hulcher Services have the nearly 200-ton Tunnel Motor suspended above 44th Avenue and are slowly rolling west toward the Colorado Railroad Museum. The cranes will stop at a bridge that runs over an irrigation ditch just ahead. There, panel track has been laid down the middle of 44th Avenue. The cranes will place DRGW 5401 on the panel track and it will be rolled across the bridge. The cranes will then cross the bridge and continue carrying the unit to the museum.

BNSF 1826 has cut away from DRGW 5401 at the grade crossing at 44th Avenue. Crews had the road closed, so this was as close as it was possible to get from the east end. Four cranes from Hulcher Services prepare to lift DRGW 5401 off the rails.

A pair of SD40-2s is escorting DRGW 5401 toward the Colorado Railroad Museum. Its trip on BNSF rails has been a short one...just over a mile...as the power will approach a grade crossing at 44th Avenue just around the bend ahead.

Unfortunately, no SD40T-2s are still on the roster of any Class 1 railroad in 2018. However, it is nice to see SD40-2s going through multiple rebuild (and repaint) programs. BNSF 1665 is a good example, sporting a very fresh paint scheme.

Great seeing Rio Grande fly letters on the side of an SD40T-2 in 2018. Sure, DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) is not operating under its own power, but with an SD40-2 on either side of it, it was not too hard to imagine!

DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) was the last unpatched Rio Grande Tunnel Motor to lead a train on the Moffat! In 2004, it led a work train from Phippsburg, CO to North Yard. It was also one of the last four Tunnel Motors to depart Helper, UT. Fitting that its brother (DRGW 5371, also one of the last four) was preserved and now live in Ogden, UT.
