The first car is the Silver Rapids. The second car is the Silver Solarium, and it was owned by the CB&Q and made the journey on the end of the train many, many, times! Due to the sudden speed change, UP has a detector set than, when an eastbound is detected, an automated voice comes on the radio reminding the train that they are approaching 20 MPH track. The east switch of Troublesome was the location of a costly (and, sadly, deadly) derailment on Tuesday, May 15, 1956. The crew on an eastbound manifest missed an approach signal at west Troublesome. The train was meeting a westbound manifest, and the westbound was not yet clear of the east switch. The eastbound train realized the mistake too late, and ran the red signal and side-swiped the westbound train. This led to the creation of a short movie called "The Trouble at Troublesome". The reason was due to an activated slide fence toward the west end of Byers Canyon. In this shot, a few rocks lay alongside the rails. The culprits? I'm not sure... It just passed a clear intermediate and is also passing by the detector at mp 79.9. One of these Septembers, I really want to try to get up here in the morning for this same shot. It is a great spot to get a shot of eastbounds in the afternoon, such as this coal load. Westbound here on the other side of the bridge wouldn't be bad, other than a telephone pole with wires running right through the middle of the scene of oncoming trains. It is lucky that US-40 runs through Byers Canyon on the opposite side of the Colorado River from the tracks.
