It's been a heck of a chase, going after this eastbound coal load with a pair of Canadian National units on the tail end. This would be the final view of it as it disappears into the west end of Gore Canyon, Tunnel 36 and 35 just ahead. You can see a pair of mid-train swing helpers just ahead, in between those two tunnels.

A pair of Canadian National units bring up the tail end of an eastbound loaded coal train, getting ready to disappear into Tunnel 39 at the east end of Little Gore Canyon. This time of year, the Colorado River is just about at it lowest.

In the middle of Little Gore Canyon, an eastbound UP coal load is in between Tunnel 40 and Tunnel 39. Little Gore Canyon is a relatively short canyon, but it is also one of the narrowest and most impressive canyons on the Moffat.

The lighting is not fantastic for this shot, but the perspective is a mighty interesting one! You can see both the head end and tail end of this eastbound coal train. Three UP units lead and a pair of CN units bring up the rear.

The California Zephyr is always a scenic and amazing ride. However, the last week of September is one of the absolute best times of year to ride the Zephyr if you can. The train is just east of Granby, heading into Fraser Canyon ahead. Fall colors are at the peak, with the Fraser River lazily twisting around in the terrain.

Unfortunately, one of the two Rocky Mountaineer GP40-3s was down for the count and spending some time in the shop, so RMRX 8600 was filling in on this trip. The engineer offers up a friendly wave as the train passes Grand County Road 57.

A few miles west of Granby, the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer passes a green intermediate signal as it passes through a cut of golden cottonwood trees. This is a shot I've wanted to get for several years, and I was happy the opportunity finally presented itself!

AMTK 60 and AMTK 190 lead the westbound Zephyr by the intermediate signal just east of Thompson. Union Pacific started replacing signals in the Utah desert 15 years ago. A project that seemingly has been abandoned. Some signals were replaced. Some new signal masts were erected with no signal heads and never completed, and others, like this intermediate, were never touched.

Union Pacific unveiled UP 1616, sporting the paint scheme that honors the 16th US president, Abraham Lincoln, in early 2025. While there was no official word why this unit was painted up, it is widely speculated that it was done in advance of the announcement between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern to merge. Abraham Lincoln once stated that it was his dream to see a transcontinental railroad that would run from the Pacific to the Atlantic. That certainly seems to be a strong indicator why this unit was created.
