The westbound Winter Park Express is slowing to a stop along the heated platform at the base of the slopes at Winter Park. Once stopped, the train will let its passengers off to collect their skies and snowboards. Despite the unseasonably warm winter with below normal snowfall, the Winter Park Express has had a great season.

The westbound Winter Park Express is stopped at the based of the slope of the Winter Park Ski Resort. While snow levels are way lower this winter, there's still enough here at Winter Park for the slopes to be covered and skiers to enjoy a day on the slopes after a great ride up from Denver on the Winter Park Express Ski Train.

The westbound Winter Park Express winds its way through a sea of trees on the single track main, making its way from the Winter Park Ski Resort (Amtrak code: WPR) to Fraser (Amtrak code: WIP). A handful of passengers did not get off the train at Winter Park, and are enjoying the ride the additional six miles to detrain in Fraser.

This winter has been one of the driest winters in Colorado history. While other parts of the country have been hammered with record snowfall, Colorado is well below the average snow pack. As you can see here in this shot with the Winter Park Express knocking down the signal at the east switch of Fraser, there is relatively little snow to be found. March is generally the snowiest month of the year in Colorado. Yet, there is dry ground everywhere.

The Winter Park Express has just completed its station stop here at Fraser, about a dozen people hopping off the train , presumably to explore Fraser. The train is rolling west and will stop just west of the siding on the main track. It will then back into the siding. The power will detach from the train, run around the train on the main, the hook back up on the east end of the train for the return trip this aftenroon.

Two of the conductors on the Winter Park Express prepare the east end of the Superliners for the power to hook up to. Meanwhile, the power itself is being taken east on the main at Fraser. It will go out the east end of the block, and back into the siding from the east to hook up to the equipment. This is the daily shuffle the Winter Park Express must go through after dropping off all its passengers.

Power for the winter Park Express has just rolled by eastbound on the main. It has a clear signal at the east end. After going through the switch, DS-378 will align the siding switch (and derail switch on the siding), and the train will get a restricting signal to come back to the Superliners in the siding.

I decided to stay out the sky and come down the ground for a low-level shot of the pair of P42DCs that are the current power on the Winter Park Express. Interestingly, for the first time in its history, the power for the Winter Park Express has been nothing but "standard" Phase 5 P42s all season. Every year prior to this, since Amtrak started the service, the train has had a less-common unit, such as a Phase 7 P42 or a heritage unit. Perhaps a sign that the train is indeed becoming a regular staple in Amtrak's seasonale schedule.

The crew for the Winter Park Express has reassembled the train in the siding at Fraser. Since the California Zephyr does not make a stop at the Winter Park Resort (or the town itself) and only stops here at Fraser for both, this stop is considered to be the "Fraser / Winter Park" stop. There are free busses that run the four miles between Fraser and the town of Winter Park.

With the train now tied down and secured, the crew has gone off duty. They will remain off duty until around 3pm when they get the train prepped to pick up passengers at Fraser and then continue east.

The westbound California Zephyr is at its station stop at Fraser, just about 10 minutes behind schedule. Fraser is a "fresh air" stop for the Zephyr. The train is usually stopped for right around 10 minutes here. Passengers can step off the train for some fresh mountain air, or to get a smoke break (if that's your thing).

With its station stop at Fraser complete, the California Zephyr is quickly accelerating to continue the trip west. The Zephyr meets its cousin, the Winter Park Express, tied down in the siding here, waiting for its turn for the return trip back to Denver.

The Zephyr has an incredibly colorful consist for the trip west today! AMTK 176, sporting the Phase 7 scheme, is leading AMTK 203, the Operation Lifesaver unit. Personally, I think the Operation Lifesaver unit is one of the most creative special schemes I've ever seen.

A few miles west of Granby is this spot I've nicknamed the "Granby Overlook". It is a fantastic spot to get shots of westbounds. The later in the day the better as the sun, of course, continues to swing around to the west. Still, not a bad look at a colorful consist on the westbound Zephyr, the Continental Divide standing with minimal snow off in the distance.

Most of the canyons the tracks of the former Rio Grande run through are only accessible by rail, trail (in some instances), or rafting. However, Byers canyon is a nice exception. With the tracks running on the north side of the canyon, US-40 is paved and runs on the south side of the canyon. Here, the westbound Zephyr makes its way through the canyon with a colorful pair leading the train.
