After getting a few shots of the Zephyr going in to Gore Canyon, it was a bit tricky catching up with him again! I could have gotten a shot in Byers Canyon, but it was raining pretty hard there and, after shooting the westbound Zephyr there earlier in the day, I opted to just get ahead and get a shot here, west of Granby. Definitely need to come up a little earlier in the season next year and get a shot of those fall colors!

The eastbound Zephyr rolls east through what is arguably the most amazing canyon between Denver and Glenwood Springs: Gore Canyon. The canyon is inaccessible by car and shots from inside the canyon are rare. Drone technology does help out a bit though, as we can see Tunnels 37 and 36 in the distance.

Even if you are experienced with the Moffat Tunnel Sub, it may take a second to recognize the location of this shot as it is from a different perspective. The eastbound Zephyr is just entering the west end of Gore Canyon. Just barely visible at the back end of the S-Curve is Tunnel 38. The slope on the other side of the Colorado River in the background leads up to Inspiration Point.

Just east of the east switch of Azure, the eastbound Zephyr has seven Superliners in tow as it tries to make up a little bit of lost time, currently running about 90 minutes behind schedule.

The Zephyr emerges from the 100-foot-long Tunnel 38 as seen from "Inspiration Point". Just around the bend, the Zephyr has a clear signal at the east switch of Azure.

At the west end of Gore Canyon, the Zephyr approaches the relatively short Tunnel 38 above the Colorado River. I was actually quite lucky to get this shot. The Zephyr had a good lead on me at Kremmling as I headed for Trough Road to get here to Inspiration Point. Fortunately (for me), a slide fence had been activated in Gore Canyon. That slowed the Zephyr down enough for me to get ahead.

The westbound Zephyr passes by a spot in Byers Canyon in which a fairly significant portion of rock broke free and tumbled down in to the Colorado River. Despite the overcast and rather washed out skies, Byers Canyon also looks pretty great.

Running about 90 minutes behind schedule, the westbound Zephyr snakes its way through Byers Canyon. Being November, this is the time of year when the Colorado River is just about at its lowest level.

The Rocky Mountaineer took the siding at Azure to meet the westbound MNYGJ. The UP manifest picked up a string of cars at Granby, which included a bunch of Herzog cars. The dispatcher probably should have held the manifest at Gore. After clearing the east switch at Azure, the switch would not align for the siding. The crew had to take the switch in hand throw and the flagged out of Azure. This delay was long enough that I had to head east without the train in order to get home for 4th of July celebrations, making this the last picture of the day.

The eastbound Rocky Mountaineer is right smack in the middle of Little Gore Canyon in between Tunnels 39 and 40. This stretch of highly scenic track is between the sidings of Radium and Azure, about 114 miles west of Denver.

Little Gore Canyon is one of the many beautiful canyons that the Zephyr runs through on its journey through Colorado. This canyon is shorter than Gore Canyon, but the walls of the canyon are a bit more sheer in many places. Here, the Zephyr just passed through Tunnel 39 (in the distance) and is now passing through relatively short Tunnel 40.

Byers Canyon is relatively short, but still very scenic. The tracks skirt the north side of the canyon and Colorado River while US-40 allows cars to run through the canyon on the south side. Here, the Zephyr heads away from the camera on its journey west.

The Zephyr is moving west through the rather narrow canyon known as Little Gore Canyon. The train has just emerged from Tunnel 39 and is heading for the east portal of Tunnel 40, just ahead of the train out of the frame.

A few miles east of Sulphur, the Zephyr is going down grade, following the head waters of the Colorado River. The Zephyr will be following the Colorado River, for the most part, for the next 200 miles or so, through Ruby Canyon in Colorado and Utah.
