After dropping off 40 cars for the KYLE, the local will pick up the string of tank cars here that the KYLE left for the local. The KYLE was formed in 1982 by the Willis B Kyle Organization after the fall of the Rock Island. The railroad has gone through several owners over the years, and since 2012, it has been owned by the Genesee & Wyoming. The railroad operate roughly 510 miles of track, with 420 miles in Kansas, and the 90 or so remaining miles in eastern Colorado. US-24 connects Limon and Colorado Springs. Limon is also the location where the UP interchanges traffic with the KYLE railroad. The KYLE runs on the former Rock Island east out of Limon. That wasn't the case on this particular June morning. A cloud settled over this S-Curve west of Limon as UP 1983 pulled through the curve with a blade train. An SD60M, a former Cotton Belt GP40-2 and a former Espee GP40M-2 make for a great sight. Both of the geeps were lashed up together last September, working on the West Local on the Rocky Spur! The crew will now proceed with their switching in town. UP interchanges with the short line KYLE railroad in town. With no trains called out of Denver or Sharon Springs, the local will have plenty of time to do their work. Even with all the time, the local will ultimately be tied down in town and a relief crew will take the local back to Denver the following day. Not too far in the distance is the interchange point between UP and the KYLE railroad, a short line that operates in western Kansas and eastern Colorado.
