The westbound Zephyr is on the main track at Cliff as we get a beautiful view of not only the Zephyr, but also of the great Continental Divide. In just another 20 minutes, the Zephyr will be traveling underneath the divide inside the Moffat Tunnel!

With nothing but clear tracks ahead, the Zephyr just crossed CO-72 and is heading west on the main at Cliff. It is a light traffic day today, even by recent Moffat standards, and the Zephyr will get clear signals for the foreseeable future.

It is a little unusual to find a trio of Heritage 2 units (and no New Image units) on a train these days. But that was the case on this morning as three C44-9Ws lead BNSF's Provo-Denver, currently tied down in the siding at Cliff.

Sometime in the pre-dawn hours of the morning, this eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver manifest tied down in the siding at Cliff. A fresh crew will need to come up to bring the train the rest of the way in to the yard. The track to the left is the house track at Cliff, used for occasional storage of work cars, or for setting out bad orders.

While the drone was in the area for some aerial shots, I was on the ground (of course) with the trusty Canon 7D for shots of the eastbound oil train. Nice to kick off the new year with something a little different.

To kick off the new year (and the new decade), we start with a loaded UP oil train at Cliff. Showing up somewhat regularly in 2018, they disappeared for awhile, now two showed up within two days to start 2020. South Boulder Creek gets little light here during the winter, so it is not surprising to find it frozen over.

Upon seeing this covered hopper on this BNSF sand train, I started wondering if I might win a prize if I send the picture to BNSF. "Find the pink car, win a prize"! In all seriousness, this was the only car on the train painted in this gumball color. A very interesting car indeed.

A westbound loaded sand train, which will be used for fracking in Utah, approaches the grade crossing at Cliff. With only five units (three on the point and two on the rear), this crazy heavy train is making an average speed of about 10 MPH up the Moffat. The three units on the point are all SD70ACes...music to the ears of this EMD fan!

Looking down from high above the east end of Cliff, we find a Ferromex ES44AC, a KCS SD70ACe, a pair of BNSFs and a pair of Norfolk Southern units all leading the Provo-Lincoln. The train is about to cross over South Boulder Creek and enter 29, the west end of the Tunnel District.

An eastbound BNSF Provo-Lincoln has a "rainbow" consist as it rounds the bend toward the east switch of Cliff. This train was at Glenwood Springs at 7:22am...so he made impressive time to be here at Cliff five hours later!

Despite being very close in number, these two units are actually very different models. The leader is an ET44AH. The unit is compliant with the Tier-4 emissions requirements put out by the EPA. The second unit is an ES44AC, which is compliant with the Tier-3 emissions requirements in effective up until January 1, 2016. Together they lead an eastbound coal load on the main at Cliff past some "stick track" laying on the ground near the east end of the house track.

Right at milepost 37, an eastbound coal train rounds the curve on the main at Cliff. a (relatively) new ET44AH leads the train. I actually shot this exact same coal train a few days earlier when it was empty and on its way west to the mine in West Elk!

Even though it is only a quarter past two in the afternoon, the light here in Pinecliff actually is not going to hold out that much longer! A UP ES44AC brings up the tail end of a westbound coal empty. The train passes near the switch stand on the siding that leads to the house track.

As a westbound coal empty heads west on the main at Cliff, take note of the pole on the right side of the image. You may also note that there are a few more such poles moving away from the camera. These poles, and the wire between them, are somehow related to PTC. Somewhat ironic that, after technology removed codeline poles, technology is now added some poles back in! These should not be required everywhere...they seem to be needed in mountainous areas.
