A westbound loaded sand train, which will be used for fracking in Utah, approaches the grade crossing at Cliff. With only five units (three on the point and two on the rear), this crazy heavy train is making an average speed of about 10 MPH up the Moffat. The three units on the point are all SD70ACes...music to the ears of this EMD fan!

Upon seeing this covered hopper on this BNSF sand train, I started wondering if I might win a prize if I send the picture to BNSF. "Find the pink car, win a prize"! In all seriousness, this was the only car on the train painted in this gumball color. A very interesting car indeed.

Three SD70ACes lead this westbound loaded sand train through the canyon between Rollins and Tolland. The second and third units are so dirty, they are great 21st century representatives of Grande and Espee units from 40 years ago! That'll happen when you are only making 7-10 MPH through the tunnels in the Tunnel District!

For those interested, note that I recorded some sound of these guys pulling...you can listen to them from this page.

The skies to the west were mostly cloud-covered (over the divide), but a few pockets of blue sky were floating around. I was lucky enough to have one hit just as this westbound BNSF sand train came rolling by on the approach to a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) signal at East Tolland.

An SD70ACe that has seen a bit of exhaust is second out on this westbound BNSF unit sand train just east of Tolland.

Somebody grab a rag and a bottle of soap! Most engines these days don't generally get super dirty, largely thanks to cleaner emissions. However, that certainly doesn't mean they never get dirty.

Thanks to the lengthening of the days and the switch to Daylight Savings Time, there is now plenty of sunlight for the eastbound Winter Park Express as it glides east on the main at Tolland.

This westbound sand train is headed directly in to the sun as the train slows to a stop on the siding at Tolland. The train just met the Winter Park Express, but another eastbound is waiting for the Moffat Tunnel to vent and head through. So, the sand train must wait...much to the disappointment of the crew as the heavy train will not be easy (or fast) to start up!

After a straight shot down the hill, the Winter Park Express (Ski Train) passes by another clear signal at the intermediate west of Leyden.

Tired skiers do not have too much longer to wait before they are back at Union Station. This season, Lyft was a sponsor of the train, and three of the Superliners received this fancy pink/purple wrap to advertise Lyft.
