You may have noticed that one ditch light is brighter than the other...this is because NS (and CSX) have chosen to have oscillating ditch lights when the horn is being blown. The crew on the train would have a good run...they would meet (or see) another train until reaching Azure on the west side of Gore Canyon! There, they would meet Amtrak #6. In the distance, a car descends down CO-72 toward Pinecliff. The road takes a shortcut over a lot of the mountainous terrain here, whereas the tracks stick close to South Boulder Creek. If you look toward the left side of the frame, you'll notice some light tan rocks on the other side of the train. That is the remains of what used to be Tunnel 28. This picture was taken from the vantage point of CO-72, which quickly climbs a mountain as you depart Pinecliff to the east. He gives a wave up to the conductor for the westbound BNSF manifest on the main. This train had some engine problems and the conductor had to walk back to the DPUs. After getting the issue resolved, he simply rode in the DPU up to Cliff where a track maintainer was waiting to give him a ride back up to the head end. If you aren't familiar with "catfish" as a reference to trains, it refers to wide cab Norfolk Southern engines, particularly GE. The white stripes on the black nose resemble the face of a catfish, and thus the name. On this day, this NS C44-9W is assisting in DPU helper duty on this westbound BNSF manifest. I should have known that, instead, I would find BNSF trains running in both directions. After stalling out (due to engine issues) at Crescent, the westbound on the main has finally made it to Cliff. If you happen to have a long lens with you, you can get some pretty dramatic shots, particularly of westbounds coming around the curve and in to view from the east. You can frequently hear that said when it comes to trains. The day after the 4th of July in 2015 was no exception on the Moffat. This eastbound BNSF manifest has been waiting in the siding at Cliff for nearly an hour. It is waiting on its counterpart, which encountered some engine problems and stalled out at Crescent. The track (out of focus) in the foreground in the Cliff House Track, which has a noticeable grade down to prevent cars from rolling out on to the siding. Utah Railway 3002 is a GP40, built in 1970 and most recently owned by Kansas City Southern before showing up on Utah Railway property in 2006. It is most likely being moved to Panama City, FL where it will receive an electrical upgrade and a repaint and return to Utah Railway as a GP40-3. It offers a great telephoto view of westbound coming around the curve on the approach to the grade crossing. Due to the blind curve, the crossing gates come down several seconds before the train is even visible. The grade crossing is for CO-72, which you can actually see above the train in the distance, headed east toward the Plains.
