BNSF had never been heard of and nobody had regular trackage rights on Rio Grande. Looking at the scene now, I cannot help but wonder what it is likely to look like in another 30 years. The sun is trying to break through the cloudy skies that have dominated the Front Range of Colorado for much of the month of May. Muddy water has pooled alongside the track as this west BNSF manifest works hard at the grade crossing at Crescent. Overcast skies suggest more rain is on the way. My youngest daughter (9) is using my old Canon Rebel XT body to get a few shots of a passing westbound BNSF manifest as the sun just barely breaks through overcast skies. It offers a great telephoto view of westbound coming around the curve on the approach to the grade crossing. Due to the blind curve, the crossing gates come down several seconds before the train is even visible. The grade crossing is for CO-72, which you can actually see above the train in the distance, headed east toward the Plains.
