After meeting its counterpart at the siding of Range, the westbound Zephyr is now gliding downhill along the bank of the Colorado River. You couldn't ask for a more perfect January day than this.

I really like the siding of Range. It is nearly 8,000 feet long and basically straight as an arrow! You can get a great, elevated perspective from the west end, too. Case in point is a look at the westbound Zephyr as it departs Range.

Unless one of the Zephyrs is running extremely late, an eastbound Zephyr and westbound Zephyr meet once daily somewhere in Colorado. An example of one such meeting is happening here at the siding of Range. The eastbound Zephyr heads down the main as the westbound Zephyr awaits a clear signal at west Range to continue toward Glenwood Springs and beyond.

When both Zephyrs are running on time, they will frequently meet at either Dotsero or Range. Dotsero is probably the more common siding...however, on this day, there was a string of empty hoppers being stored in the siding at Dotsero. Consequently, the eastbound and westbound Zephyrs are meeting at Range. The westbound Zephyr is holding the siding at the eastbound Zephyr knocks down the signal at the west end.

Range is an appropriate name for this siding located in the middle of an open range. The tracks are straight as an arrow through the entire siding!

Patched Southern Pacific AC4400's are becoming more and more common. Here, two AC4400CW's, one UP and one primarily SP lead an eastbound coal load from a mine on the Northfork Subdivision in western Colorado.

A loaded coal train approaches the siding of Range. The train will have to stop on the mainline for about two hours to effect repairs on the last unit on the back of the coal train.

This eastbound coal train is following the Colorado River, working its way toward the siding of Dell. After Dell, the coal train will go through Bond, CO on its trip east toward Denver.
