Sitting in the siding at Rollins is the westbound Zephyr, which just came to a stop about two minutes earlier. The Zephyr did beat the oil train, but overall, it is a pretty good meet. However, the days are still long enough here in mid-September that, even as the sun gets low in the western sky, there is still plenty of light as the Zephyr rolls east on the main near the east end of Rollins. There is no P42DC to be found. Instead, a quartet of Siemen-built ALC-42s lead the train east. These new units will slowly replace the aging P42DC fleet, at least on long distance trains. The lead unit, AMTK 301, sports a 50th Anniversary celebration scheme. The remaining three units wear the Phase VII scheme, the newest scheme introduced by Amtrak and the official scheme, for the time being, moving forward. It is the ET44AH and it was first put in to production about six years ago. It is compliant with Tier-4 emissions standards. The Tier-4 units are more complex and, in general, have required more maintenance than Tier-3 (and older) units. Consequently, Tier-4 units from both GE and EMD have not been particularly big sellers. UP has 170 of these ET44AHs on the roster. Ironically, for a long time, it was the shortest siding at only 4,300 feet. In the early 1980s, Rio Grande extended the siding a few hundred feet to the west and a few thousand feet to the east. As it happens, that is what is going on here with this coal train. The conductor is in the process of applying hand brakes on the train and, once done, he will come back here to the derail and align it for the derail position. The crew has been instructed by the dispatcher to tie the train down, so the conductor is out of view around the corner applying hand brakes to the train. That was due to a defective gondola, which has been set out in the house track to the left. The dispatcher let the eastbound Zephyr and BNSF's Provo-Denver around the coal load through the siding before also getting the coal load a clear signal to finally proceed east. Such as the fact that you can see right through the gondola to the rail head and ties below!? The bottom of the gondola ripped apart and away from the car somehow, dumping a significant portion of the cars coal in the process. Much of the coal still remains, teetering in the car.
