I have been trying to get a picture like this one off and on for about three years now! In the past, a cloud would come along messing up the exposure, or it would be raining, etc. However, this morning, conditions were finally about as good as they can get as the MRONY crosses over the (newly rebuilt) bridge just east of Tolland.

After meeting the Ski Train at East Portal, UP 4583 leads the MRONY-21 east through Tolland. You couldn't ask for a better summer afternoon in Colorado! The temperature outside was a pleasant 75 degrees.

It is getting late in the day as UP 7322 heads east past the west switch of Rollins. A bit of smoke is coming off the brake shoes of the coal load as the engineer works his magic, keeping the load under control down the hill.

An ongoing project west of Craig, CO involving the construction of a gas pipeline has required several unit pipe trains coming up the mountain westbound over the Moffat. It is a great change of scenery from the normal traffic! Here, one such train sits in the siding at Rollins awaiting a fresh crew from Denver.

The Ski Train blasts out of the Moffat Tunnel right on time at 4:30pm on a Saturday afternoon. The Ski Train has been making some very good time between Denver and Winter Park lately, often getting to its destination early!

JT 20004 is a C38AChe produced by General Electric. The unit is bound for the Qinghai-Tibet Railway (QTR) in China. The QTR started construction in June 2001 and will cross 715 miles when complete. Amazingly, over 600 of those miles will be over 13,200 feet above sea level, with the highest point being 16,740 feet above sea level. The crews on board the trains will indeed have respirators that they can where as needed at the high altitude.

UP 5627 leads the MNYPH-16 west at Rollins. This train, bound for Phippsburg, CO, consisted entirely of sand being hauled west. Being loaded (with only three units), the train was moving slow up the grade.

In January, the sun is low enough in the sky in the mornings that it is hard shooting the Ski Train west of Plainview. On this particular Sunday morning, I went west to East Portal and got the train coming around the bend toward the east switch of the siding.

The old Rio Grande bridge (built in 1948) that was located a mile or so east of Tolland has been torn out and replaced. On this day, UP crews and contractors worked hard to build the new concrete bridge that will support trains for many years to come!
