Less than five minutes before the sun peaks over the Book Cliffs to the east, BNSF's Denver, CO to Provo, UT manifest has a clear signal at the east switch of Solitude. This is the first train to run over these tracks since a coal empty, seven hours earlier! The desert doesn't get much action these days.

It is 9:30am and Amtrak 6 is running about 45 minutes late. This picture was taken from atop one of the many dirt mounds that can be found in the desert. This particular mound is about halfway between the sidings of Floy and Solitude.

With the Book Cliffs in the background, this eastbound coal empty is highballing the siding of Solitude. Note the interesting nose of the second unit. That is UP 8555, a true 6000 horsepower SD90MAC.
