After meeting a (late) westbound California Zephyr at Tabernash, the MRONY (Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO) got a clear signal from the dispatcher to start pulling east. A little exhaust is kicked up as the head end starts pulling up the 1.29% grade.

A pair of private cars (the "Evelyn A Henry" and the "Warren R Henry") were found on the back of the westbound Zephyr on this morning. The cars belong to Patrick Henry Creative Promotions. While the company specializes in food and beverage marketing, they own these two cars (which are based out of Houston) and you can charter the cars from the company.

At the east switch of Tabernash, the westbound California Zephyr enters the siding. The Zephyr is meeting the eastbound MRONY, currently holding on the main track. There is a grade crossing on the siding at Tabernash (but there is not one on the main, and the main and siding are not parallel to each other). As a result, coal trains or manifests that have to hold at Tabernash will typically hold the main so the grade crossing on the siding is not blocked.

This westbound came about 25 minutes too late! The sun is now well behind the mountains to the west as the train enters the siding at Tabernash. It's headlight is dimmed so as not to blind the crew on the eastbound sitting on the main. Winter is definitely on the horizon as you can see snow accumulating on the mountain peaks on the Continental Divide.

The sun is getting very low in the sky as an eastbound coal loads sits on the main track at Tabernash. It is waiting for a westbound empty that is still in the Moffat Tunnel. Eastbound loads hold on the main at Tabernash instead of the siding because there is a road crossing halfway through the siding.

The eastbound California Zephyr wraps through the east end of the siding at Tabernash after meeting BNSF's Denver to Provo manifest. Kind of interesting that this shot has two train meeting on Union Pacific track, yet neither train is a UP train!

UP's daily MRONY holds on the main track at Tabernash. The dispatcher has informed the train that they will be waiting for a little bit. The MNYRO has to set out a pair of cars on the house track at Fraser, and the crew will need to hold here in the meantime.

Okay, this one is for all of you black and white fans! The westbound California Zephyr highballs Tabernash under some dramatic high country Colorado skies. The temperature outside is just over zero degrees.

Hmmm, do we have diesel or steam here? The second P42 on Amtrak was having a bad smoking day. In addition to smoke, a fair amount of snow is being kicked up too. The highway off to the left is US-40.

The Ski Train is heading back to Fraser where it will wait until it is time to pick up its passengers. Not the signal at Fraser in the distance. Even further in the distance, skiers are enjoying a great day of skiing on the slopes at Winter Park.

Clouds were a bit unpredictable on this morning and the temperature was a chilly three degrees below zero! After wying at Tabernash, the Ski Train is on its way back toward Fraser. Looks like the Ski Train could stand a good power wash.

At the back of the train, a brakeman is aligning the switch from the wye (which the Ski Train is currently on) to the siding. After backing onto the siding, the train will continue east on the siding and return to the siding at Fraser.

I love the view down the tracks looking from Tabernash east towards Fraser. It is a very long, straight shot. In this picture, you can see the clear intermediate signal as well as the signal at the west end of Fraser. Fall colors are starting to make this area a very photogenic spot, not only for railfans but for everyone!
