Got snow? Looks like its been awhile since the siding at East Portal has been used as some snow has built up across the road crossing. A track maintainer had to clear snow from the switch points at the east end as the switch heaters couldn't keep up with the blowing snow.

A westbound manifest heads into the siding at East Portal to meet an eastbound coal load. Although it isn't snowing from above, the wind is blowing extremely hard and kicking up snow on the ground!

Eight AC units lead up the MNYRO holding on the siding at Tolland. The train is holding here while a track inspector clears the switch points at east East Portal. Once clear, this train will move up to East Portal to wait for an eastbound coal load.

A passenger aboard the Kansas waves at the camera out the back of the vestibule. Needless to say, that passenger is probably a bit warmer than the photographer! The Ski Train is at the east end of East Portal.

Just over a mile away from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel, the first run of the 2008-2009 Winter Ski Train is running against blowing snow in temperatures around 0 degrees. Add the wind chill, and it was a balmy 22 degrees below zero out!

This coal empty is about to do something that is repeated thousands of times a year...make the 6.2 mile-long journey beneath the Continental Divide through the Moffat Tunnel! The curtain is up, the signal is yellow and the train has clear tracks ahead.

A westbound coal empty holds short of the grade crossing at Tolland to wait for an eastbound. Now that Tolland has been extended to the east, the entire coal train can sit on the siding without blocking the main or the grade crossing!

A few fall colors are still evident from up on Rollins Pass looking down into the valley where the Moffat Tunnel is located. The tunnel itself is actually obscured in fog, but an eastbound MRONY (tied down in the siding) and a westbound coal empty are visible.

East Portal is not one of the more commonly used siding for meets, let alone for tying down trains! However, the MRONY was indeed tied down here...smiley face at all!

A westbound coal empty makes its way west on the main at East Portal. The train was moving very slowly here as it was preparing to stop a few hundred feet ahead to shut down a bad order engine on a train tied down on the siding.

On a very chilly afternoon 9,000 feet above Sea Level, UP 9633 is doing its best to warm up its surroundings! A few cylinders apparently weren't firing resulting in some descent flames coming out of the exhaust stack. A few minutes later, the crew of a westbound coal empty would stop, shut down and drain the unit.

An eastbound MRONY was tied down in the siding at East Portal. It is not very often that trains are tied down here! The siding most commonly used for tying down trains have had hand-thrown derails installed. Here, a "manual" derail was slapped onto the track.

Even though I missed "Gold Week" in the high country this year, I was happy to find a few aspens still showing the colors up at Tolland. Snow is certainly dominating the scene though just twelve days into October as the MNYRO heads west through the siding.

This coal empty prepares to come to a stop on the siding at Tolland to wait for Amtrak. With the recent extension of Tolland to the east, the entire coal train now fits in on the siding (without blocking the grade crossing). The westbound Zephyr is approaching Cliff at this point.

Sometimes when you go after a train - even when things are setup just right - you can still manage to get burned! Case-in-point was this particular morning. Just west of Rollins, along East Portal Road, I had a descent lead on the Ski Train. Then, I come around a corner and see two cars both going 15 MPH (half the speed limit). With two cars on a dirt road like this, it isn't safe to pass...and they show no signs of pulling over. The Ski Train comes and blows past us! When I finally got around, I had no chance to catch back up. This was the only view of the Ski Train I got on this morning.
