Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
Sometimes when you go after a train - even when things are setup just right - you can still manage to get burned! Case-in-point was this particular morning. Just west of Rollins, along East Portal Road, I had a descent lead on the Ski Train. Then, I come around a corner and see two cars both going 15 MPH (half the speed limit). With two cars on a dirt road like this, it isn't safe to pass...and they show no signs of pulling over. The Ski Train comes and blows past us! When I finally got around, I had no chance to catch back up. This was the only view of the Ski Train I got on this morning.

This coal empty prepares to come to a stop on the siding at Tolland to wait for Amtrak. With the recent extension of Tolland to the east, the entire coal train now fits in on the siding (without blocking the grade crossing). The westbound Zephyr is approaching Cliff at this point.

Running a couple of hours late, the westbound California Zephyr comes around the corner and into beautiful downtown Rollins! With slightly cooler temperatures and slightly higher precipitation levels, there is a lot of green to be found up at altitude.

An engine running a bit too hot has the westbound MNYRO-19 holding on the siding at Crescent with the crossing lights active. Another ten minutes after this shot and the train would be ready to continue west.

About 3 miles away from the mainline on the Rocky Spur, a Saturday run of the Rocky Local is slowly backing down the spur. Note the conductor and brakeman holding on tightly to protect the reverse move and handle any misaligned switches.

Backing down the Rocky Spur toward TXI Aggregate (at the end of the line), the Rocky Local passes by "Old Time Lumber", a company located right off Highway 93.

The Rocky Local works on dropping off a string of covered hoppers on the inbound track at TXI Aggregate. The cut of hopper to the left are on the outbound track and will be taken by the local back to town.

Approaching the grade crossing at what used to be the west entrance to Rocky Flats, the Rocky Local is moving along at a cautious 10 MPH. A few of the hoppers that were to be dropped off at TXI Aggregate could not fit on the inbound track. Those hoppers will be spotted on the tail leg of the wye near the old Rocky Flat. They will be delivered to TXI at a later date.

Two things are being done by the Rocky Local in this shot. First off, the power is preparing to spot some covered hoppers on the tail leg of the wye. Once those have been spotted, the power will come back around the wye in the foreground, attach to the hoppers in the foreground and shove back down to the mainline.

The power for the Rocky Local has run around the wye and is now backing to attach to the hopper returning to town. The train will shove down the spur back to the mainline and will then be in position to return to town.

As the Rocky Local backs down the Rocky Spur toward the mainline, a telephoto shot from Highway 93 shows the power for the local against the Denver Skyline about 15 miles in the distance.
