At the east end of Rocky, there is a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) signal for a westbound BNSF Denver-Provo. Note the switch bent for the siding. The train will hold in the siding to allow the Zephyr to run around it.

The westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky. When UP took over the Moffat after the UP/SP merger, UP assigned control point IDs to every control point in addition to their name. For example, East Rocky was given the ID "CP DS016". The "CP" stands for "Control Point". The "DS" represents "Denver and Salt Lake", the original owner of the line. The "016", in theory, represents the nearest milepost. However, East Rocky is actually around milepost 17.5...so "CP DS017" would have made more sense. An interesting little enigma that lasts to this day.

It is not particularly often that I get the opportunity to get shots of the eastbound Zephyr in January with this much light here at Rocky! Extreme winter weather in western states has been playing havoc on the rails and, as a result, the Zephyr is running just over 17 hours late. Hopefully, it'll have an opportunity to make up a little bit of that time on the way to Chicago. However, weather in the mid-west hasn't been great either, so making up time does not seem likely!

At the east end of Rocky, UP's eastbound Grand Junction to North Yard manifest holds in the siding to meet the daily westbound Zephyr. Note the Rocky spur off to the left toward the top of the image. The spur breaks away from the main a few thousand feet to the west, and climbs an 8% grade to rapidly gain elevation up the hill.

The eastbound Zephyr rushes away from the Rocky Mountains and the rapidly setting sun in order to reach Denver and continue on to points east toward Chicago. The just passes a Clear (green) signal at east Rocky and is now headed in to Barbara's Gulch. While you probably cannot tell at first glance in this shot, but the lead unit was one of the 44 P40DCs Amtrak took delivery on. It has since been upgraded to P42DC specs, but it still wears the number of a P40.

A look at an Approach (yellow over red) signal at the east end of Rocky. The signal indicates that a westbound - in this case, the Zephyr - can proceed as far as the next signal at the west end of Rocky. At this point, the signals are not aligned further west because an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver is making its way in to the siding at the west end.

Near the east switch of Rocky, UP 1943 comes to a stop on the main track. The unit is needed on the MNYGJ which is currently tied down in the siding. The crew on UP 1943 is currently linking the DPUs in preparation to head west.

Just east of the east switch of Rocky, the Provo-Denver is entering in to the west end of Barbara's Gulch on the journey east in to Denver. Once there, this Grand Junction-based crew will head to the local hotel for rest. Most likely, they'll return to Grand Junction tomorrow on the Denver-Provo.

If you've checked out pictures on my website for any length of time, then you have likely read in the past that this is one of my favorite all-time engines! The SD70M (Phase 2) has been a favorite of mine since it came out nearly 20 years ago. The slightly slanted radiator intakes give it a little character, and the teardrop windshield with the original EMD wide cab nose just look great.

With traffic on the Moffat so low these days, it is always great to find a UP train! Coal is practically nonexistent and oil trains after very few and far between as well. UP stopped the MNYRO and MRONY 18 months ago. They also stopped the MNYPH and MPHNY. Cars bound for the Craig Branch are dropped off or picked up at Bond by the MNYGJ and MGJNY. That means the MNYGJ and MGJNY are the only UP trains you can still reliably find on the Moffat. And even those only run every 2-3 days on average.

A GP38-2 and a GP60E (recently rebuilt) lead up five covered hoppers for an easy trip back to the yard. The hoppers are loaded with aggregate from the only industry still found on UP west of Denver on the east side of the divide. The local used to run twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but has been down to just Wednesdays for a few years now.

The West Local, with five covered hoppers, knocks down a clear signal on its way east back toward Denver. UP 700 was recently repainted and now sports a fresh pair of "baby wings" on the short hood.

A slightly different perspective from the east switch at Rocky! The Westbound Zephyr, with two extra baggage car on board, just knocked down a clear signal and passed by a signal maintainer checking out something inside the signal box at the east switch.

Seven units lead a westbound coal empty headed for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch. "A coal empty?", you might be asking. "That does not look like a coal hopper behind the power!" - and you would be correct. With the implementation of PSR (Precision Scheduled Railroading), UP is reducing the number of trains by combining some trains. In this case, manifest traffic that would be on the MNYPH is instead added to the point of coal empties.

This coal train actually loaded in Utah at the Savage mine rather than in Colorado. It is making its way back east and, due to the long distance, will have to stop in Denver for a full (FRA-required) inspection. The symbol of the train is the CSVJA9-28. The "9" at the end of the symbol (before the date) indicates the train requires a 1,500-mile inspection.
