The westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky. When UP took over the Moffat after the UP/SP merger, UP assigned control point IDs to every control point in addition to their name. For example, East Rocky was given the ID "CP DS016". The "CP" stands for "Control Point". The "DS" represents "Denver and Salt Lake", the original owner of the line. The "016", in theory, represents the nearest milepost. However, East Rocky is actually around milepost 17.5...so "CP DS017" would have made more sense. An interesting little enigma that lasts to this day.

It is not particularly often that I get the opportunity to get shots of the eastbound Zephyr in January with this much light here at Rocky! Extreme winter weather in western states has been playing havoc on the rails and, as a result, the Zephyr is running just over 17 hours late. Hopefully, it'll have an opportunity to make up a little bit of that time on the way to Chicago. However, weather in the mid-west hasn't been great either, so making up time does not seem likely!

The eastbound Zephyr rushes away from the Rocky Mountains and the rapidly setting sun in order to reach Denver and continue on to points east toward Chicago. The just passes a Clear (green) signal at east Rocky and is now headed in to Barbara's Gulch. While you probably cannot tell at first glance in this shot, but the lead unit was one of the 44 P40DCs Amtrak took delivery on. It has since been upgraded to P42DC specs, but it still wears the number of a P40.

With traffic on the Moffat so low these days, it is always great to find a UP train! Coal is practically nonexistent and oil trains after very few and far between as well. UP stopped the MNYRO and MRONY 18 months ago. They also stopped the MNYPH and MPHNY. Cars bound for the Craig Branch are dropped off or picked up at Bond by the MNYGJ and MGJNY. That means the MNYGJ and MGJNY are the only UP trains you can still reliably find on the Moffat. And even those only run every 2-3 days on average.

Seven units lead a westbound coal empty headed for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch. "A coal empty?", you might be asking. "That does not look like a coal hopper behind the power!" - and you would be correct. With the implementation of PSR (Precision Scheduled Railroading), UP is reducing the number of trains by combining some trains. In this case, manifest traffic that would be on the MNYPH is instead added to the point of coal empties.
