The Zephyr has reduced its length from nine Superliners to seven Superliners, cutting one sleeper and one coach. This is pretty common at the end of the summer, when demand for Amtrak rail travel decreases a bit.

Two Patrick Henry cars are catching a ride on the back of the westbound California Zephyr. The Zephyr is taking the siding at Rocky to meet an eastbound BNSF manifest, which you can see holding the main in the distance.

Not the best lighting, but I could not pass up an opportunity to grab a shot of the Rio Grande Heritage Unit! It is pretty hard to believe that this unit is nearly 20 years old! It was unveiled at North Yard in June 2006. The paint is a bit dirty and could certainly use some touch up. The unit is headed to North Platte, NE for engine work. Perhaps it'll end up getting a paint job before its 20th birthday next summer.

The clouds were kind of all over the place this morning, which was casting some crazy shadows and creating a lot of contrast. UP's MGJNY, led by a graffiti-ridden ES44AC, rolls into the OS at East Rocky.

A C44ACM and an SD70M lead a westbound passenger deadhead by the east switch of Rocky. UP 6045 is sporting UP's newest paint scheme. UP 4533 has the good old flag scheme and is fantastic condition. Say what you will Union Pacific, they really know how to make a passenger train look great.

UP's track gang, which is working on replacing ties at the east switch of Rocky, has cleared the tracks to allow the morning Zephyr to creep through at 15 MPH. The foreman of the track gang has established was is known as a Form B. A Form B has starting and ending limits, and when active, a "red board", which is literally a red square board on a pole, is placed trackside. Trains are not allowed to pass the red board, regardless of block signals, or even dispatcher permission, without getting permission from the track foreman to enter the limits.

Looking down on the east switch of Rocky, you can see this track gang working to replace some old ties by sliding new ties underneath the rails. Sometimes, it take a little effort, and the bulldozer has to move the tied back and forth, almost hammering it underneath. Looks like the radio channel sign, which changes from 54/54 to 23/23 for westbound trains here are Rocky, is laying on the ground to the side of the rails.

This bulldozer is equipped with a tool that allows it to get a good grip on ties and literally pull them out from underneath the rails! The crews remove the spikes and tie plates, and then slide them right out.

UP 5306 rounds the bend out of Rocky, headed toward the CO-93 underpass and Barbara's Gulch. In another mile or two, the train will be able to pick up some speed, as the part of the Moffat with the most curves will be left behind.

The only UP train manifest left on the Moffat, the MGJNY (and its counterpart, the MNYGJ) runs six times a week. West, then east, and repeat, with one day off. The train is generally feast or famine, with today's train being on the feast side with 103 cars. Many of the cars on the train are loaded coal hoppers.

Well, this wraps up my coverage of the Winter Park Express Ski Train for the 2024-2025 season. It sounds like it has been a tremendously successful year, with the train expanding to run five days a week (Thursday through Monday). Here's hoping the train returns to be just as successful next winter. For now, the P42DCs and the Superliners will be taken on the Zephyr west to California later in the week.

The eastbound Zephyr is about to knock down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky, hustling to make it in to Denver on time. In fact, it will end up arriving in Denver 11 minutes early. To the left, not the back end of a UP oil empty, which is starting to pull west out of Rocky. The oil train will go up to Plain to meet the Winter Park Express.

Just east of the east switch of Rocky, this UP oil train is about to dive into Barbara's Gulch and will pass underneath the CO-93 overpass. Once arriving on one of the Bypass tracks in Denver, the crew will need to cut out the three mid-train DPUs and then put the train back together. The train will depart east for the KP with a fresh crew and the three units on the head end.
