Well, this wraps up my coverage of the Winter Park Express Ski Train for the 2024-2025 season. It sounds like it has been a tremendously successful year, with the train expanding to run five days a week (Thursday through Monday). Here's hoping the train returns to be just as successful next winter. For now, the P42DCs and the Superliners will be taken on the Zephyr west to California later in the week.

The eastbound Zephyr is about to knock down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky, hustling to make it in to Denver on time. In fact, it will end up arriving in Denver 11 minutes early. To the left, not the back end of a UP oil empty, which is starting to pull west out of Rocky. The oil train will go up to Plain to meet the Winter Park Express.

Just east of the east switch of Rocky, this UP oil train is about to dive into Barbara's Gulch and will pass underneath the CO-93 overpass. Once arriving on one of the Bypass tracks in Denver, the crew will need to cut out the three mid-train DPUs and then put the train back together. The train will depart east for the KP with a fresh crew and the three units on the head end.

DS-378 has set up a nice meet here at Rocky between the westbound California Zephyr and an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver. The conductor on the Provo-Denver is just climbing down off the head end in order to give a roll by to the Zephyr. There isn't a cloud in the sky, which is resulting in slightly colder temperatures, right around 20°F (-7°C) at the moment.

Looking out the back of Winter Park Express Ski Train, the morning sun breaks through mostly cloudy skies at the east end of Rocky. A thick layer of frost is covering most everything this morning, making for a very beautiful scene.

Following about 30 minutes behind the Zephyr, a westbound UP oil train knocked down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky. As you can see, the train wraps through Barbara's Gulch and can be seen in the distance.

AMTK 170 and AMTK 82 leads the westbound Zephyr through a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky. AMTK 82 is, of course, sporting the new Phase 7 paint scheme. This is the first non-Phase 5 unit on the Zephyr in at least a couple of weeks.

As you can see, fresh snow is currently falling as the westbound Zephyr charges west on the main track at Rocky. The train is running right on time and, hopefully, the weather will not adversely affect the Zephyr.

The start of the third snow storm of the week has hit at East Rocky, and this one is expected to drop anywhere from 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) between now and early tomorrow afternoon. The westbound Zephyr knocked down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky.

This eastbound military train was so long, it would not even fit between switches at Rocky! Indeed, the only two sidings between Denver and the Moffat Tunnel that the train would fit on are Rollins and Tolland. The other seven sidings on this side of the divide are all too short. Regardless, the train departs the east end of Rocky, headed for one of the bypass tracks in Denver. There, a relief crew will soon take over, taking the train east on to the KP and across the plains to Fort Riley in Kansas.

The sun is getting much lower in the western sky earlier in the day as we get closer to the end of the summer. Passengers on the eastbound Zephyr enjoy last afternoon views as the train accelerates into Barbara's Gulch.

The westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky. To the right, in UP's dirt parking lot, there are number of MOW vehicles, including a bus, that dropped off a huge gang of workers at o-dark-thirty the night before. The gang powered up a bunch of MOW rail vehicles that were tied down in the siding at Rocky and, at 3:30am, headed west!
