In the distance up at Eisele (Clay), the westbound counterpart, the Denver-Provo, is on the main, a pair of SD70ACes bringing up the rear of the train. There is nothing particularly special about this P42DC when you look at it. So why did I make the effort to get a shot? I am trying to get shots of as many of Amtrak's P42DCs before they are inevitably retired. AMTK 140 was one of 41 units I had not yet shot (out of 207 total units). With this shot, only 40 left to try to get shots of. Alas, some I will never get as a few have been wrecked and/or retired for other reasons. The decision was made to swap the P42DCs around. AMTK 170 had been the trailing unit upon arriving. After a couple hours of swapping units around, AMTK 170 became the leader and the train departed west. Here, the train passes by empty tank cars and sunflowers on the trip west. In this shot, you can clearly see the difference between welded rail (on the main) and jointed rail (on the siding). Some track equipment is currently tied down on the house track. Note some MOW equipment in the house track at Rocky. UP has been doing work on Little Ten and Big Ten Curves over the course of the past month or two. Across the valley, you can clearly see some of the open hoppers used as a wind break on Big Ten Curve. The haze in the area is due to (common-in-summer) forest fires currently burning in Oregon and North California. It is meeting the MGJNY, and the meet will come close to being a rolling meet. A rolling meet is a meet in which neither train actually comes to a stop. The coal empty will continue rolling without stopping, but the manifest will come to a stop for about two minutes while the empty clear. That is just what is happening here at Rocky as a westbound coal empty rolls through the siding as the Grand Junction to North Yard rolls east on the main. The train had to wait for the westbound Zephyr, which you can now see on the main in the distance (above the manifest), heading west. Alas, the crew of the manifest do not get to release the brakes quite yet as another westbound is coming between Leyden and Rocky.
