An eastbound BNSF oil train sits in the siding at Rocky, waiting for the westbound Zephyr to come out of Denver. Currently, the siding at Leyden is filled with empty well cars, so it cannot be used for meets.

Overnight in the Denver-Metro, an average of around 4" of snow fell. The Zephyr is running about two hours late this morning, and a few westbound freight trains have already come through, cleaning the snow off the rails.

A westbound UP oil train empty is slowly rolling west in the siding at Rocky. The train will come to a stop at the west end of the siding to wait for an eastbound loaded oil train which, currently at Crescent.

On a side note, this would be the final picture in direct sunlight taken in 2023!

Two units are in charge of this eastbound coal empty at Rocky. And yes, it is indeed a coal empty heading east! The 100 coal cars had been stored somewhere on the ex-DRGW.

UP's MGJNY frequently contains a high number of covered hoppers, and this particular instance of the train is no different. Seven units on the head end, and a single DPU (facing in to the train), roll east on a clear (green) signal through Rocky.

The westbound Zephyr has seven Superliners right now, most likely due to an increase in demand with holiday travels upon us. The train is just about to enter Little Ten Curve, approaching the old west end of Rocky, before it was lengthened around 1990.

I learned photography from my dad, and as a kid, he always shot black and white. In honor of him, and to get back to my nostalgic roots, I have been trying to do a little more black and white photography these days! This westbound BNSF coal load is headed west on the main at Rocky, BNSF 9174 bringing up the tail end.

An AC4400CW and a pair of ES44ACs lead a coal load west on the mainline at Rocky. Even though it is not yet 3 o'clock, the train is just minute away from shadows with the low setting sun.

A somewhat interesting trio of GEs (a BNSF ET44C4, a CSX AC4400CW, and a BNSF ES44AC) lead BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest. The train is currently stopped in the siding at Rocky. The train has no crew at the moment. A crew will show up to take the train in to Denver, but it could be anywhere from 4 to 24 hours before the crew actually appears.

20-25% of the time, BNSF's Provo-Denver will tie down in the siding at Rocky rather than making it all the way to Denver. There are a number of reasons this might happen. The top two generally are either that the yard in Denver is not yet prepared to receive the train, and/or the crew on the train does not have enough time left on the clock to make it in to the yard before "dying" (hitting their hours of service). Here, one such Provo-Denver sits idle in the siding at Rocky with no crew, the derail at the east end of the siding set.

At this point in the day, there is only a single dispatcher for the entire former Rio Grande from Denver to Salt Lake City. So, although the West Local has toned up the dispatcher to request permission to enter the main track at Rocky, they have not yet heard back.

This morning's westbound Zephyr got out of Denver nearly two hours late this morning. The main reason for the delay was the 3rd and 4th unit in this shot. Those units had actually been sitting in Track 5 at Denver Union Station for the past week or two. They were picked up by the Zephyr here to be transported to Oakland.

UP 6888 was once an AC6000CW, with 6000 HP. However, the prime mover has long since been replaced with a standard 4400 HP prime mover, and the unit itself has been rebuilt and is now designated as an C44ACM on UP's roster. It is also sporting UP's newest paint scheme, which has ditched the flag from the long hood.

A westbound oil train, a bit shorter than is typical, rolls in to the siding at Rocky. The train is in the siding to allow the westbound Zephyr to run around the train. However, the Zephyr is running late getting out of town, and after 35 minutes, the train will continue up to Plain to let the Zephyr run around it there.
