Gotta love the full on green that accompanies the month of May! A coal load heads east at Plain through a picture-perfect spring scene.

Coal has certainly experienced a major drop off in the last decade, but it isn't completely gone! Here, an eastbound coal load rolls down the main at Plain, passing some maintenance equipment. The train loaded at Energy Mine on the Craig Branch.

A look at one of the Amtrak California Comet cars, which is headed back to California after a couple weeks away...granted I am not entirely sure what the reason was for leaving.

This is not a particularly common sight...finding a Sightseer Lounge car as the last car on the Zephyr! This is due to the fact that this is actually the second of two lounge cars on this westbound Zephyr. The reason? The entire train has been booked for "Train Jam", and Amtrak has added an extra lounge car for the journey.

Running right on time, we find the annual "Train Jam" Zephyr heading west on the main at Plain. "Train Jam" is an event in which the entire train is rented out by a single group that bring along software gaming developers to travel by train to the annual Gaming Developers Conference held in San Francisco. Amtrak has added an extra sleeper, an extra coach, and an extra lounge car compared to the standard Zephyr compliment for the event.

The "pink sticker cars" (as a friend's daughter refers to them) are on the east end of the Winter Park Express as it heads west on the main at Plain.

The California Zephyr is running about 30 minutes late due to some mechanical issues. The P42DC that led the train in to Denver shut down. In need of a second unit for the trip west. AMTK 156 was taken from the Winter Park Express Ski Train on Track 5. Whether or not the unit will make it back to Denver before the next run of the Ski Train is unknown!

A good old Colorado snow storm dropped about five inches of snow at Plain overnight, giving way to partly cloudy skies today. Despite some sunlight, the temperature was only 5°F, keeping the snow on the vegetation. BNSF's orange looks great as a trio of GEs lead the Provo-Lincoln through the scene.

BNSF's Provo-Lincoln manifest rolls east down the main at Plain with some beautiful, snowy flat irons as the backdrop. Plain has not been used since five inches of snow fell overnight!

One of the best parts of riding the California Zephyr west out of Denver (in my humble opinion) is the ascent from Rocky up and along the Front Range. Alas, Mother Nature had some other plans for passengers on this morning. The Zephyr quickly disappears into the fog as it heads west.

This morning found a lot of fog and a bit of permafrost on some of the vegetation at Plain. As the headend rolls by, the fog is thick enough that you cannot see the last Superliner on the train! These conditions but be tough on crews, particularly when approaching grade crossings.

It's an extremely foggy morning as the westbound Zephyr approaches the grade crossing at Plain. You might be able to tell that the ditch lights are oscillating at this point. Considering the limited visibility, the engineer starting blowing the horn well in advance to make sure no cars were on the crossing.

It is so great that a few of these Budd-built cars have been saved! It's been 35 years since cars like these regularly traversed the Moffat. Here, the Silver Rapids and Silver Solarium head for their home base in California after a weekend visit to the Mile High City.

All of the cars on the westbound Zephyr are veterans of passengers service. But the last two, even more so! The Silver Solarium (the domed car) celebrates its 70th Birthday here in 2018! As much as I love the CB&Q dome, I sure wish Rio Grande's version...the Silver Sky...could be restored. It is currently for sale (as of this picture) if someone has $25,000 burning a hole in their pocket!

A single CSX ES44AC brings up the tail end of this eastbound coal load at Plain. This unit was the one leading this coal empty west just two days earlier. Since then, the train loaded at the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch.
