An eastbound coal load on the Limon Sub just west of the siding of Mesa. A special visitor just happens to be on the point on this day, too!

UP 1982, the Missouri Pacific heritage unit, leads an eastbound coal load as the train crosses underneath the RTD "A-Line" commuter rail that connects Union Station to Denver International Airport. The train is approaching the grade crossing at Airport Blvd.

The screaming eagle leads an eastbound coal load underneath the RTD A-Line that connects Union Station in downtown Denver with Denver International Airport. This coal train loaded at the West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch two days ago. Fortunately, the engineer setting up the power in Grand Junction set up 1982 to lead east.

High early afternoon sun shines down on UP 1982 and UP 6239 (ex-SP 190) as the train slows to a stop, facing a red signal at the west end of Mesa of on the Limon Subdivision.

I must admit, the more I see the Missouri Pacific heritage unit, the more I like it! I have always been a fan of the "Jenks Blue" (the dark blue), and I have also always liked the "Screaming Eagle" on the long hood. Would be rather cool if Missouri Pacific survived to 2018 and actually had this paint scheme.

The Roydale Local is on the mainline at Mesa after having switched out some cars at local industries. It now has five cars in the tow heading back to the Roydale yard. It will have to hold the main for a bit though as UP 1982 is leading a coal train east in to the siding.

UP 1982 slowly makes its way east through the siding at Mesa. DS-86 was unable to get the switch at the west end to throw to the siding. So, the crew had to take the switch in hand throw and was flagged past the red signal at West Mesa in to the siding.

The Rocky Mountains and the Denver Skyline will soon be out of sight for this eastbound coal train as it heads for the Great Plains in Eastern Colorado. Currently, the train is running through the siding at Mesa, around a local that had been working on the main.

Rolling slowly east through the siding at Mesa, the Missouri Pacific Heritage Unit (UP 1982) leads an eastbound coal load toward a clear signal at the east switch. The train is passing underneath I-70 in the background, a highway that the tracks will more or less parallel until Limon, CO.

The Missouri Pacific heritage unit, UP 1982, leads an eastbound coal load through the siding at Mesa. The train was loaded at the West Elk Mine on the North Fork branch in Western Colorado and is now headed for the plains on the Limon Sub. The last time I caught the unit leading a train in Colorado was almost exactly four years ago when it led a manifest on the Moffat on July 13, 2014.

A three quarters look of UP 1982 from the back as it leads an eastbound coal load through the siding at Mesa. Screaming eagle and Jenks blue look mighty fine in the high July sunlight.

Here is something of a rare sight! UP is using a borrowed ES44C4 from BNSF to bring up the tail end of this eastbound coal load as it departs the siding at Mesa.
