BNSF's engine fueling and sanding facilities at "the house" in Denver. The closed track is the Running track, the track to the right is the Pit track, and the track to the right of that is Rip 1. Not too many engines getting serviced on this particular Friday.

The doors for tracks Line 1 and Line 2 are open on the west side of BNSF's engine house in Denver. There are three tracks within the building, although Line 3 is only accessible on the east end as it dead-ends within the building.

For decades, EMD has used either SD## or GP## as the prefix for its models. It seems that EMD is reluctant to go to a three-digit number (e.g. SD100), so all their new units in the last 15 years (basically since the SD90) have been "SD70ACe" followed by a suffix. That continues with the latest unit, designated an SD70ACe-T4. As you probably guess, the "T4" stands for "Tier 4", and indicates the unit is EPA Tier-4 compliant.

Introducting the SD70ACe-T4. This is one of four prototypes for the first EPA Tier-4 compliant engine produced by EMD. While it looks essentially like an SD70ACe externally, internally it is an entirely different animal. A few things to note externally. First, EMD is bringing back the teardrop windshield. A welcome change for both crews and railfans alike. Next, note the new fabricated trucks. Last, the long hood is higher and "boxier" ahead of the radiator housing. Internally, the prime mover is brand new. Traditionally, EMD prime movers have been two-stroke and 16 cylinders. This new prime mover is four-stroke and 12 cylinders. It still generates the 4400 HP the SD70ACe generated. On top of it all, the demonstrator paint scheme looks darn nice, too!

EMDX 1502 and 1503 sit near BNSF's Engine House along with EMD's test car. These units carry the designation "SD70ACe-T4" and they are the first Tier-4 compliant units produced by EMD. These are prototypes that are undergoing extensive testing by EMD.

EMD is a little behind the curve in the "Tier 4" game. Starting January 1, 2015, railroads could only purchase engines that were EPA Tier-4 compliant. GE had production units rolling by late 2015. EMD had yet to roll out a prototype at that point. However, they now have four prototypes on the rails, two of which had been testing at the Transportation Technology Center east of Pueblo. BNSF brought them to Denver and, rumor has it they will head west on the Moffat next for some high altitude testing.

An ES44DC and a (very clean) C44-9W are the sol power for today's Denver, CO to Laurel, MT freight. This train departs Denver daily and runs on the Front Range Sub for the 600-ish mile journey to Montana. Laurel send a counterpart train to Denver each day as well.

Came across this pair of CSX AC4400CWs on a warm August morning. I like the shot as it nicely compares two CSX paint scheme. The gray scheme on the right had been the norm for many years. More recently, the "Dark Future" scheme - dominated by blue - came out as is now the standard.

It isn't every day that CSX units make an appearance in Denver! On this particularly day, however, a pair of them came in with a train off the Brush Sub. Both units have AC traction motors, as indicated by the lightning bolt beneath the number on the cab. CSX only adds this lightning bolts to AC units.

This is definitely a very interesting lashup of power. This train just came in off the Brush Sub with a pair of GP39Ms (rebuilt from GP35s) and a pair of CSX AC4400CWs. The cars were dropped in the yard and the power is now headed for the House for fuel.

The car on the left is part of a larger machine used in washing ballast. Not entirely sure why this piece was sitting near BNSF's Engine House.

Until recently, BNSF's GP60s were in the 8700 number range. They were moved in to the 159 number range in order to make room for new power. This new number range puts the GP60s adjacent to the (originally Warbonnet) GP60Ms.

A colorful trio of (classic) power sits near BNSF's Engine House. This includes a blue SD60 leasor, a blue and yellow GP60 (recently renumbered to 166 to make room for newer power in the roster), and a cascade green SD40-2.

In order to make room for newly arriving units, BNSF has moved its SD60Ms to a new spot on the roster. BNSF usually does a pretty good job of patching units to match their present paint scheme. A bit of an exception would be the "1448" patch, seemingly done quite hastily here (in black) on the cab of this SD60M.

Got yellow? A GP20 for the South Plains Lamesa Railroad sits near BNSF's Engine House, waiting to head south on the Joint Line and be returned to its home. The unit spent most of its life in Santa Fe yellow and blue before being sold around 2000 to the short line.
