There are parts of the country (outside of the Northeast Corridor) in which multiple Amtrak trains run on the same tracks daily. One such example being the Silver Star and Silver Meteor in Florida. While this is a special running of the Ski Train, it could pass as just another Amtrak train. So I thought it would be fun to capture both this train and the California Zephyr from the same perspective (on the same evening). The Zephyr passed here about 40 minutes earlier on its journey in to town. Incidentally, the power on the Ski Train is reversed from the morning, with AMTK 42 trailing. This is because the wye at Tabernash is out of service. The power had to run around the train at Fraser, placing AMTK 187 on the point.

The eastbound California Zephyr, running ahead of schedule, approaches the grade crossing at 66th Avenue. Both Amtrak and the (special) Ski Train were set to depart Fraser around the same time. The Zephyr got to run first and is about 40 minutes ahead of the Ski Train. The time difference is because the Ski Train had to wait for the Zephyr to clear the Moffat Tunnel and then wait for the tunnel to vent before it got its turn.

The tail end of an eastbound coal train prepares to disappear through the cut just east of 66th Avenue in Arvada. I recall my dad taking a picture from near this location in the late 70s of a westbound DRGW coal empty that had six Tunnel Motors on the point! Time marches on...

This eastbound coal load is approaching the 66th Avenue grade crossing roughly halfway between Leyden (CP DS011) and Arvada (CP DS007). At Tennyson Street, the train will be relieved by a new crew that will cut out the swing helpers and tie the train down on Bypass Main 1.

Amtrak is kicking up the snow the morning after 10+ inches of the white stuff fell in Arvada. The clear skies brought with it chilly temperatures, and it is only 18°F (-8°C) as the on-time Zephyr approaches 66th Avenue.
