A side view of Rio Grande GP30 #3006. This unit is now owned by Daniel Quait, who intends to preserve the engine. It has been stored in Burnham for nearly 20 years, when it was retired from active service. From here, it will be need to be moved to a new home as the tracks at Burnham are being ripped out.

A 3/4 roster shot of Rio Grande GP30 #3006 as seen from the back end. This GP30 was actually still be used on locals into the late 1990s. That's why you will find a pair of ditch lights on the back end of 3006.

Burnham Shops in Denver was shut down by Union Pacific on Valentine's Day, 2016. By the start of June, crews were well on their way to ripping out track. Equipment owned by Daniel Quait, including Rio Grande GP30 #3006, still sit on one of the yard tracks on the west side.

The main entrance to the Burnham Shops off of Seminole Road. The gates for Burnham were still open on this morning. But that will only be the case for another week. The gates closed permanently on Valentine's Day, 2016.

Empty rails. Sadly, after being the main maintenance facility for Rio Grande for decades (and a major facility for UP as well for nearly two decades), Burnham Shops are closing. All the power that was once stored here has been moved to places such as North Platte, NE and Grand Junction, CO. Soon, these tracks and the buildings will be ripped up and this scene will turn from railroad/industrial to residential.

In a couple of years, this picture will be radically different! The track in the foreground, one of RTD's Light Rail tracks, will still be there. And the the next track over will likely still be there (so UP can serve a few customers along the line), but the rest of the tracks and the buildings will all be replaced with condos and apartments as UP has sold the Burnham property to a developer.

A rack of "blue flags" sits alongside the empty tracks at Burnham. While you expect Rio Grande power to disappear over time and things like signals to be replaced, I have to admit I never really thought about the possibility of Burnham closing. Definitely came as a shock.

The main engine shops at Burnham. As of this picture, Burnham only had a week of life left in it. No work, other than cleanup, is happening inside those buildings. Only a skeleton crew of workers remains to facilitate the cleanup.

Talk about a blast from the past! This was one of the last Rio Grande GP30's to be retired off the roster. This unit almost saw action in the 21st century, being retired on July 23, 1998. It has been sitting here in Burnham ever since, waiting for its new (private) owner to find a permanent home for it. The unit survived for nearly 37 years, seeing its first action in April of 1962.

As of this photo, this is one of only about two dozen Tunnel Motors that have not yet been retired from UP's roster. Time may be short for this unit, however, as it sits in a deadline at the Burnham Shops in Denver. This unit started life as SP 8259 in May 1980.

Whoa! Hello 1980's flashback! Two SD60s and two B40-8s sit on a "dead line" on the east side of the Burnham Shops. Once revenue picks back up as the economy (eventually) recovers, these units may be put back into service. Then again, they may be destined for short lines or even scrappers. Time will tell.

Every locomotives that comes out of either Erie, PA (GE) or London, ON (EMD) has a unique serial number stamped somewhere on the frame (called a frame number). This can be useful for railfans because, if a frame number can be found, the original unit to roll out of the factory can then be identified. Here is the frame number on UP 1350 (originally DRGW 3100). The number is 7360-7.
