I had the opportunity to get a tour of UP's Burnham Shops in Denver with the Rocky Club. It was a very cool experience. Even cooler to consider the Rio Grande history as these were the main shops for Rio Grande. Here, we see engines waiting for some traction motor replacement.

Need an engine? Union Pacific is in the process of converting the AC6000CW fleet back to standard 4400HP AC4400CW (officially C44/60AC on UP's roster). The 6000HP experiment just didn't work out for UP. All of EMD's SD90MACs (with 6000HP) are off the roster and most of the AC6000CWs have been converted back. This unit, previous UP 7569, is waiting for is 4400 HP engine to be plopped in.

You can see that this AC6000CW, formerly UP 7569, has received a patch kit and is now UP 6958, a C44/60AC. This unit just had is 6000 HP prime mover removed and is waiting for a 4400 HP prime mover to replace it.

When this unit rolled into Burnham a few days earlier, it was UP 7557 and had 6000 HP. It has now been renumbered UP 6946 and has a 4400 HP prime mover. It is now awaiting some electrical work before it can be released.

Need a long hood? I hadn't realized how relatively easy it was to simply lift off a part of the long hood and set it on the ground! As you can see in this shot, parts of UP 6948 have had electrical work completed.

Need an alternator? Imagine how much electricity one of these guys could pump in to your Toyota Camry! These alternators lay on the floor, just waiting for the next unit that needs a new one put in.

A pair of workers show how easy it easy to move around pieces of a long hood. It appears that the long hood here is made of paper rather than steel as it is moving to a holding area while work commences on the engine itself.

I didn't really realize how compartmentalized diesel-electric locomotives were! You can see all the electrical cables bundled together at the front of the long hood. This unit is waiting for a new 4400 HP prime mover to be lowered in it.

The unit to my left has had its 6000 HP prime mover removed and is waiting for a new 4400 HP prime mover. Meanwhile, UP 6907 (which was converted to 4400 HP about a year ago) awaits a standard inspection.

Here is the heart of a GE AC6000CW locomotive! This is General Electric's 7HDL-16 prime mover. The lack of success with the 6000 HP experiment is resulting in these engines being removed in favor of the 7FDL-16, a 4400 HP engine.

This kind of gives new meaning to the term "getting under the hood"! A section of the long hood on diesel-electric locomotives can be lifted off with a crane, exposing the entire prime mover, allowing for maintenance.

The portion of the long hood that covers up the prime mover has been removed from UP 6907. A crane operator lowers the hood to the floor as mechanics start to look at the prime mover on the left side of the photo.

While major work such as removing prime movers, changing alternators and traction motors is done on the west side of the shop, the "minor" work (electrical, etc) is done on the east side of the shop. Burnham today is actually a General Electric shop with a mix of GE and UP employees, so the vast majority of the units serviced are GE. However, an EMD unit will wonder in for maintenance from time to time. On this day, we only spotted a single SD9043MAC, UP 8217, seen in the distance here in this shot.

UP 6919 sits on one of the servicing tracks, awaiting some electrical work. There are several logical "slots" where units are stopped in here and platforms extend across the tracks between the locomotives. The platform here is level with the platform on the unit, allowing for easy access when working.

While the platform above allows mechanics easy access to the top half of the locomotives, here we see how access is made easy to the trucks and lower half of the locomotive. The rails in the east side of the shop are literally on stilts. This way, the trucks and lower components on the locomotive are at eye level for mechanics performing work.
