Several times each day (as needed), hostlers from North Yard transport units from North Yard to the shops at Burnham. These units may need repairs, or they may simply be due for their 90-day inspection. Here, a set of seven units is on the Burnham Lead. The units just came off of the Joint Line at Walnut Street.

This Tunnel Motor is one of a very few that still hasn't "officially" been retired by Union Pacific as of this picture. The unit started life as SP 8259 and was delivered 29 years earlier in May 1980.

The main workhorse! When the Ski Train would make trips up into the Colorado high country, it would typically fall on SKTX 289 to generate the Head End Power for the train, providing power to all the passengers.

When SKTX 242 was unable to lead the Ski Train for whatever reason, the duty would often fall upon SKTX 283. The rest of the time, the unit would typically be found second up in the lineup.

The tried and true leader of the Ski Train for nearly a decade! SKTX 242 has been the standard leader on the train ever since the former Amtrak F40PHs came to town.

Car #9, the Winter Park, has operated as the "home base" car on the Ski Train for many, many years. The Ski Train manager set up in this car and car hosts reported to this car in the mornings to get their assignments.

The standard look to the Ski Train for almost the past decade. A trio of former Amtrak F40PHs have been in charge of the train. The units were purchased from Amtrak on a "lease-to-purchase" program, which was completed in 2004.

One of the last looks at the Ansco Ski Train. The train was sold less than week earlier to a subsidiary of the Canadian National. Soon, the train will be off to Canada.

Some of the final shots I ever expect to take of the Ski Train. The sale is complete and soon the train will be headed to its new home in Canada.

Need an engine? UP has a few of them available in storage at Burnham (in Denver). The units tend to be older and most have been sitting in Burnham for at least a year. There are many C40-8Ws here and there is a string of SD90MACs in the distance. There units are the true 6000 HP units developed in the late 1990's. It is unlikely they will ever see service on UP rails again.

All twenty of the SD90MACs (with a true 6000 HP prime mover) that UP still has on its roster were in storage at Burnham - in one long line - at the end of 2007. Who knows if these units will ever be reactivated, or if they perished soon after the inception, similar to the U50 about thirty years ago.

Starting in 1997, Union Pacific took delivery of 21 SD90MACs with 4-cylinder, 6000 HP prime movers. Roughly a decade later finds 20 of these 21 units in storage, not being used. The 21st unit has been returned to EMD for testing purposes. One of the 20 units in storage, UP 8923 (ex-UP 8513) is seen at Burnham in Denver.

About five months...that's how long this former Grande SD50 has been sitting right here in this exact spot! With so many new units showing up on the property, UP has stored several units indefinitely. UP 9858 (ex-SP 5514, nee-DRGW 5514) is one such example. It is being stored in Burnham near downtown Denver.

Ever wondered where they store the Ski Train during the off-season? The Ski Train has a couple of tracks reserved at Burnham just for them. The train is broken up over two or three tracks and the power is kept on yet another track. Here, the train will sit (and be worked on) until the summer runs start at the end of June.
