The Limon Subdivision used to see a lot of traffic in the early 2000s. Coal trains coming from or headed to mines in Western Colorado, during the height of coal, would run on the Limon Sub. These days, the eastern mainline has all but been deserted. The Limon Local makes periodic trips from Denver to Limon. There is an occasional oil train, but most of the UP oil trains run on the Overland. There's also a grain train from time-to-time, but otherwise, not much runs out here. You could easily spend an entire day trackside and not see anything moving. Fortunately, I was able to catch the Limon Local this afternoon as it heads east, just west of Agate.

East of Denver, I-70 follows the Limon Subdivision pretty closely until the town of Limon, at which point the track turn southeast and follow US-287. Here, just west of Agate, we get a shot of a 40-car Limon Local, following along the interstate.

A single ES44AC is crossing over West Bijou Creek, which actually does have a little bit of water running in it right now. The grain empty is heading for Cheyenne Wells in eastern Colorado.

An eastbound empty grain train crosses over West Bijou Creek just west of Byers on its way east toward Cheyenne Wells. Once there, the train will tie down in the siding and the power will return to Denver. The train came from Eagle Pass, TX, went up to Topeka, KS, then made its way over the Overland to Cheyenne, back south to Denver, and east.

After a coal load broke in half near Buick, the KP Line came to a halt! This eastbound special stopped here, west of the siding at Byers, and held for several hours while waiting for the coal load to get on the move again.

Just west of Byers, the tracks cross over West Bijou Creek. Here, an eastbound UP special crosses over that bridge right at the same time a cloud decides to float on by. Wouldn't you know it! The special is approaching an approach signal at West Byers. However, its current track warrant will keep it 1/4 mile short from the switch.

As a result of the power shortage, the railroad leasing company CitiRail (a subsidiary of CitiBank) recently ordered 100 ES44ACs. Upon delivery, the units were leased out to BNSF. That fact makes this an interesting shot, as this is a CitiRail unit, leased to BNSF, and now being borrowed by UP on an empty oil train!

BNSF train on the Limon Sub? No, this UP oil train is just borrowing some BNSF power for the journey. The train original in St James, LA and is headed for Carr, CO where it will be loaded and return back to Louisiana. The train is crossing over the West Bijou Creek (west of Byers, CO) over a good looking truss bridge.

This little SW7 was once owned by Inland Steel. It was since sold (several times) and is now used to switch out the grain elevator located alongside the Limon Sub in Byers, CO.
