There is some rain in the area as the next week is predicted to bring a LOT of precipitation in Colorado. The train is moving at a descent clip...in fact, if you look closely, you can see a bit of coal dust blowing off the hoppers on the left side of the shot. The coal load is approaching the west switch of Byers. There is a clear signal and the train has a track warrant to continue heading east toward Sharon Springs, KS (the next crew change point) and points beyond. No, this UP oil train is just borrowing some BNSF power for the journey. The train original in St James, LA and is headed for Carr, CO where it will be loaded and return back to Louisiana. Upon delivery, the units were leased out to BNSF. That fact makes this an interesting shot, as this is a CitiRail unit, leased to BNSF, and now being borrowed by UP on an empty oil train! That's good news for some lines out there, one of which is the UP Limon Sub. Other than a daily freight and a few locals, the Limon Sub is primarily supplied by coal trains. Fortunately, oil trains will hopefully help to bring traffic to a line that is seeing a decrease in coal. Here, an empty oil train heads west through Strasburg, about 35 miles east of Denver.
