Although the canyon walls are not that tall, Byers Canyon is nothing to scoff at! There are some extremely tight curves throughout the canyon, and trains are limited to 20 MPH for the duration.

Heavy snow falls on a frozen Colorado River and an eastbound coal load, slowly reaching the east end of Byers Canyon. The train will take the siding at Sulphur to wait for a westbound coal train currently coming through Granby.

US 40 runs through Byers Canyon on the opposite side of the Colorado River from the tracks. Notice how very low the Colorado River is...the result of an ongoing drought in most of Colorado.
