The westbound MNYRO takes the siding at Troublesome to prepare for a meet with the eastbound California Zephyr. The signal at the west end of Troublesome shows a high yellow (Approach) signal in preparation for the arrival of Amtrak.

Four years ago, the MNYRO and MRONY almost always had SD70Ms for power. However, the economic downturn of late has resulted in a lot of AC power available. UP typically runs AC power on the MNYRO, shuttling several units to Glenwood Springs where they will be used as mid-train swing helpers.

After pulling a string of covered hoppers from TXI Aggregates, the West Local backs across Colorado Highway 93 on its way back down to the mainline at Rocky. The last unit in the consist in a former Rio Grande GP40-2!

Looks somebody has spent some time to try to "unpatch" this former Espee GP40M-2! You can clearly see the outline of a UP shield that has been painted over on the nose!!

The Rocky Local (now referred to as the West Local) makes a rare Saturday appearance on the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead. The local is switching out hoppers at the TXI Aggregate plant, about four miles north of the Moffat mainline.

The MNYRO comes to a stop at the east switch of Fraser. Here, the crew will make a cut and tie down the back portion of the train. Then, two gondolas will be set out on the house track. The hill on the right side of the shot is used for intertubing in the winter. You can also see the ski run at Winter Park in the distance, and even a ski lift atop the mountain in the upper right hand corner.

UP's daily MRONY holds on the main track at Tabernash. The dispatcher has informed the train that they will be waiting for a little bit. The MNYRO has to set out a pair of cars on the house track at Fraser, and the crew will need to hold here in the meantime.

As UP 1989 and the MRONY depart Leyden, the pass the classic DRGW signal at the east switch. I've wanted to get a shot from this perspective for awhile now, and thought UP 1989 would be the perfect candidate for the shot. What do you think of the spot?

After sitting at Leyden for a little over 45 minutes (to wait for the MNYRO to get out of North Yard), the MRONY now has a clear signal and departs Leyden with UP 1989 leading the way.

The conductor for the MRONY (with UP 1989) stands on the ground and watches as the MNYRO heads west on the main track. The MNYRO would receive a good rollby by the conductor, and next it will be the MRONY's turn to depart.

At the east switch of Leyden, the daily MNYRO has a clear signal and heads west on the main track. This one of the few locations left on the east side of the divide where the signals haven't yet been replaced by Union Pacific.

The MRONY holds in the siding at Leyden shortly after the sun peaks over the houses on the hills to the east. The 96-car train has been informed that North Yard won't have room for them until the MNYRO heads west.

Just west of the west switch of Leyden, UP 1989 crosses over Indiana Street on one of the few-remaining "Rio Grande" lettered bridges. The nearly full moon is high in the sky, looking down on the train.

After lots of snow and rain in the past few weeks, there is a LOT of green in the Denver area right now. After meeting a westbound at Leyden, this eastbound coal load is on the move, headed for Public Service in Denver.

Five GE ACs and UP 1989 (the lone EMD unit on the train) lead up the MNYRO at Leyden. Most of these units - included UP 1989 - will be taken off the train at Grand Junction, most likely to serve as mid-train swing helpers on eastbound coal loads.
