There was a northbound BNSF manifest in the area, for a chance for a "over/under" shot was in the cards. Alas, the northbound stopped to walk the train after it sparked a few fires along the right-of-way south of Cheyenne. UP 4014 backs away from the camera, headed for home at the end of this western tour. In one month and one day, the Big Boy will be departed Cheyenne east for a massive journey that includes a trip on Norfolk Southern to Philadelphia. That run is between Cheyenne, WY and Denver, CO (and back) over the course of three days. The train just came out of the yard on Main 4, and is passing by CP W511. UP's tracks were here in Cheyenne before the C&S Line, meaning the C&S Line had to climb a fill to use a bridge to cross over UP's transcontinental mainline. Indeed, the bridge does carry BNSF's Front Range Subdivision across UP's (far busier) Laramie Subdivision on the west side of Cheyenne. The grade crossing at Southwest Drive is a pretty popular spot for railfans (and, in particular steam fans) to stop for some shots, and today is no exception. Photo ID: 107879 Date Shot Photo By Friday, September 27, 2019 Kevin Morgan Location Times Viewed CP W511 Cheyenne, WY 1162 (Add a Comment) Subdivision Railroad Laramie (UP) Union Pacific UP worked with ALCO to design and create the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy in the early 1940s to run on trains between Green River, WY and Ogden, UT without having to "double head" (run two steam engines instead of one) the trains. 25 Big Boys were built and delivered between 1941 and 1944 and they ran in service until 1959. After starting between Green River, WY and Ogden, UT, they were later moved to Cheyenne and ran on trains primarily between Cheyenne, WY and Laramie, WY over Sherman Hill. 60 years after leaving service, UP 4014 steams again as it departs west with a special to head toward Sherman Hill.
