UP's MGJNY has arrived in North Yard. After dropping off some cars in Track 5, the remainder of the train is being backed into Track 4. After clearing in Track 4, the power will wait for UP 4014, sitting back near the yard office, to back in to Track 9. Then, the power here will go to the fuel tracks.

Steaming up! UP's 83-year-old Big Boy steam engine is coming to life. Shortly, it will pull out of this track near the North Yard yard office and proceed north to Cheyenne.

After spending two nights in Denver, UP 4014 is slowly pulling out from one of the tracks near the North Yard office. Imagine a time when a scene like this at North Yard was a daily occurrence! Granted, Rio Grande never had any Big Boys, but the idea of steam moving around North Yard is a fun one.

UP 4014 rolls past a crowd of folks gathered near the North Yard office, preparing to departing north for Cheyenne. I love the Colorado flag the steam crew has mounted on the engine.

You can see a lot of railfans (or, at least, steam fans) lining the overpass on 48th Avenue as UP 4014 pulls out of the storage track at North Yard. Soon, it will back down into Track 9 and pick up a string of freight cars for the trip to Cheyenne.

Perhaps the best shot of UP 4014 I have to date, the engine has just crossed underneath I-70 as it pulls south on one of the south leads for North Yard. The train is going to back into North Yard, specifically into Track 9 to pick up a string of UP freight cars for the journey north to Cheyenne.

I cannot pretend to be a steam expert, so I do not fully understand all the ins and outs of where steam is emitted and why. But I also cannot deny just how cool the engine looks as steam is blowing out of it as it slowly rolls on one of the North Yard lead tracks just south of I-70.

Steam pour out from underneath the 48th Avenue overpass as UP 4014 backs up on the switch lead toward Track 9. Ten railfans are on the overpass, capturing pictures as the 4-8-8-4 steam engine makes its reverse move.

UP 4014, a 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" steam locomotive, was built by ALCO (American Locomotive Company) in 1941. After spending 20 years in service, it was retired in December 1961 and wound up at a museum in Southern California. UP reacquired 4014 from the museum in 2013 and moved it to Cheyenne in 2014. It was then rebuilt and once again runs under its own (steam) power. Here, on the final day of a two month tour that covered ten states (Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming).

Not every day that you see the nose of a spartan cab EMD next to the nose of steam locomotive. For that matter, it certainly is not every day that you'll find a steam locomotive in the middle of North Yard in Denver! UP 4014 is backing down Yard Track 9 to pick up a string of freight cars for the trip to Cheyenne.
