This particular SD70M, currently in storage in the yard in Laramie, WY, is one of 25 SD70Ms that Southern Pacific received prior to the merger with Union Pacific. In fact, UP 3999 here was the last of the 25 units, SP 9824, delivered in August 1994.

Talk about graffiti! If UP 4357 is put back in to active service (it is currently being stored in Laramie, WY in this shot), I certainly hope that one of the first stops will be at the paint shop.

I'm not sure, but this SD70M might hold the record for the most amount of "tagging" (graffiti) that I've seen applied to a single unit! While it is being stored in Laramie, WY now, I'm guessing it must have spent some time in Southern California or the Houston, TX area.

As you may be aware, Union Pacific has a lot of locomotives stored all throughout its system right now. Laramie, WY is no exception, as there are nearly two dozen SD70Ms in storage here.

I had some commitments back home in Denver in the evening, so this was the farthest west I was able to chase UP 4014 on this trip. I included this shot to give an idea of the number of steam fans the Big Boy always draws!

Union Pacific is working on painting a unit, which will be number UP 4547, in a red, white, and blue scheme for the 250th Anniversary of the United States. However, there is some controversy out there as the unit will include President Donald Trump's name on the unit (note UP 4547, for the 45th and 47th President). However, that unit was not yet ready for the western leg of the cross-country tour of UP 4014. UP 1776, which is freshly painted in UP's scheme, but has an "America 250" decal on the nose, was used on the train.

Last year, UP unveiled an SD70M painted in a special scheme honoring Abraham Lincoln. The unit was renumber UP 1616 (as Lincoln was the 16th President). The unit is on the train with the Big Boy, seen here behind the "water bottle" arriving in Laramie.

The Big Boy is going to be spending a lot of time on the rails in the next few months! Today is the first day of a tour that will take the train from California to Washington DC! The Big Boy sure looks good as it rolls by the camera here on Main 1 in Laramie, WY.

Anybody that has ever chased a UP steam train before knows that it can be very difficult to get ahead of the train due to the number of people interested in pacing the train on the highway rather than get ahead of it. After shooting the train at Hermosa, I could not get ahead of it again until Laramie. Here, the train has crossed over from Main 3 to Main 1 and is approaching it's first stop so it can get greased up. The flags look very classy, as does the new eagle the steam crew added to the nose for the 250th birthday of the United States.

I grew up in the diesel era, but I am not going to lie that there is nothing like seeing the 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" in command of a train. UP is taking the engine to Roseville and back over the next several weeks. The train will operate over Donner Pass and it will run through Feather River Canyon as well.

Many people, myself included, were expecting UP 4014 to head west from Tie Siding to Laramie on Main 3. But UP instead decided to send it west on Main 1. Here, just east of Laramie, engineer Ed Dickens looks at the window as the train is approaching its stop in Laramie.

The eastbound California Zephyr crosses over Laramie River on Main 2 just west (geographically north) of Laramie, WY. The Grizzly Creek wildfire in Glenwood Canyon has closed UP's Glenwood Springs Sub and, as a result, the Zephyr is being detoured through Wyoming between Salt Lake City and Denver. Interestingly, this is the same train set that I rode in just six days early on a return trip from Glenwood Springs to Denver.

With its mechanical stop in Laramie completed, UP 4014 and crew head west on Main 1, crossing over the Laramie River in the wide open range of Wyoming. The train is heading railroad west, which is geographically north at this particular location.

While waiting for UP 4014 to depart from Laramie, this westbound ballast train came blasting through with some colorful red and silver ballast cars. An SD70M led the way west.

Just east of Laramie, UP 4014 and train are slowing on Main 3 as they prepare to stop on Main 1 at the Laramie Depot for a mechanical stop of about 45 minutes. The clouds are slowly starting to roll in from the west.
