The eastbound California Zephyr crosses over Laramie River on Main 2 just west (geographically north) of Laramie, WY. The Grizzly Creek wildfire in Glenwood Canyon has closed UP's Glenwood Springs Sub and, as a result, the Zephyr is being detoured through Wyoming between Salt Lake City and Denver. Interestingly, this is the same train set that I rode in just six days early on a return trip from Glenwood Springs to Denver.

A westbound UP stack train crosses over Remount Road west of Cheyenne on UP's Overland Route. The elephant-style intermodal train is a nice change of pace from the type of traffic common to Colorado, which sees far more coal and manifest traffic than intermodal. The train is being led by a Tier-4 credit ES44AH.

The crew on this westbound UP intermodal train get to see something they likely are not particularly used to see, and quite possibly were not expecting as a rerouted California Zephyr comes toward them on Main 2. The Zephyr is being detoured through Wyoming due to a wildfire in Colorado that has the tracks closed near Glenwood Springs.

Just west of Speer Jct, a rerouted eastbound California Zephyr sits stopped, waiting on Main 3. A new UP engineer just got on board the train and are preparing to depart for the Greeley Sub south to Denver. There is an Amtrak crew on board, but a UP "pilot" engineer is needed to ride with the Amtrak engineers as they are not as familiar with the route.

At the very north end of the Greeley Sub (at Speer Jct), the eastbound California Zephyr crosses over BNSF's Front Range Subdivision as the Zephyr begins the final leg of its detour route between Salt Lake City and Denver.

Both UP and BNSF have lines between Denver and Cheyenne. Here at Speer Jct is where they happen to cross one another at a grade separation.

Just around the corner from Speer Jct, AMTK 15 and AMTK 134 lead a rerouted California Zephyr south on the Greeley Sub toward Denver. The famous old water tower at Speer Jct is visible in the background.

Having just passed underneath I-25, the California Zephyr is now rolling south on the Greeley Sub. In a moment, it will pass underneath Terry Ranch Road on its journey south toward Colorado and Denver.

The eastbound California Zephyr crosses over Lone Tree Creek and is coming up to an Approach (yellow over red) signal at the north end of Carr. The westbound Zephyr is just entering the siding of Carr at the south end. Both Zephyrs are being rerouted through Wyoming due to a wildfire that has the tracks through Glenwood Canyon closed.

In the tiny town of Carr, CO, the dispatcher has set up a great meet between eastbound and westbound (rerouted) Zephyrs. It will prove to be a "rolling meet", meaning neither train will have to come to a stop.

After the eastbound and westbound Zephyrs met here at Carr, the siding furthest to the north on UP's Greeley Subdivision, both trains continue on their way. In the distance is a trans-loading facility that was built within the last ten years or so.

Now we are cooking! In true GE fashion, as the westbound Zephyr starts to accelerate, AMTK 180 belches out not only quite a bit of exhaust, but some pretty decent flames as well from the exhaust stack! GE units are notorious for doing this, although newer models seldom have this happen anymore.

This scene has something of an other worldly feel to it as a rerouted California Zephyr comes to a stop at the south end of La Salle in the siding. What you see in the sky obscuring a very red sun are not clouds, but rather smoke from one of three major wildfires currently burning in Colorado. This fire is the Cameron Peak fire which, as of this photos, has burned nearly 6,000 acres.

A southbound UP manifest sits patiently waiting in the siding at Platteville. The train has had to wait for two northbounds, and is now waiting for a rerouted California Zephyr to overtake it south. The Zephyr is out of La Salle and will come flying by on the main soon. The scene has a been of a pink tint to it as the sun tries to shine through smoke from a wildfire to the west.

As the sun sinks lower in the west sky, the shadows grow longer. A rerouted California Zephyr passes by fields of crops just north of Fort Lupton about 27 miles north of Union Station.
