My eldest daughter - six years old here - stretches her legs and does a little posing for the camera as a westbound loaded ballast train approaches Little Ten Curve at the west end of Rocky.

"Newest and New" lead up a Ballast Train at Rocky. I phrase it this way because I don't think it is fair to call an C40-8W "old" just yet! And an ES44AC definitely qualifies as "newest".

UP is doing a lot of work on the Cane Creek Sub between Brendel, UT and Potash, UT. The line is about to see a couple trains daily, working to clean up Uranium Tailings near Moab. The project will move 12 million tons of tailings over the next 10-20 years! This ballast will be laid along the tracks about 250 miles west of this shot.

Just west of the west switch of Leyden, two men work to put out a few fires started by a passing westbound that threw some sparks into the dry grass. It is probably lucky that the tracks are above the grass here as the fire burning up toward the tracks more than down toward the rest of the field.

A few hot spots can still be found burning on a hill that caught fire when a passing train (at east Leyden) threw some sparks that landed in the dry grass.

A fire started by a passing train at east Leyden spread rapidly up a grass hill and burned down this house, the home of a 92-year-old woman. Fortunately, she was not injured. But, as you can see, the house is a total loss.

UP's West Local was throwing some sparks...okay, a LOT of sparks...on its journey west on this Tuesday. Multiple fires started along the tracks between MP 10 and MP 16. One fire started at east Leyden and rapidly spread up the tracks (through dry grass) toward some houses!

Another BNSF coal train utilizing some trackage rights to run on the Moffat? Nope! This coal train is 100% Union Pacific. BNSF is paying back UP some power-sharing hours. UP decided to keep all seven units together and here are five of the seven (the other two are bringing up the rear)! The train started off at the Cherokee Power Plant on the Belt Line and is headed for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch.

Three great looking, freshly painted GP40-2s provide power for the westbound Rocky Local. The local has been getting a late start the last few weeks. It hasn't been getting out of North Yard until mid-to-late afternoon.

Very little light left in the sky for this shot of the eastbound Ski Train making its way back toward Denver. A few people sit in the back of the Kansas and use the vestibule lights to observe the tracks behind them.

The eastbound Ski Train blazes through the grade crossing at 72nd Avenue at track speed on its trip back to town. While it looks like the intermediate signal at Kipling is red (left side of the shot), it is actually flashing yellow (Advanced Approach). The red is a result of the long exposure to capture the "blur".

You can visibly see the decrease in snow as the tracks lose altitude along the Front Range. Above this train, you can see the tracks going through Clay. The train itself is now at Rocky, and there is considerably less snow. Note the mid-train swing helpers about to go through Little Ten Curve.

An eastbound coal load approaches Little Ten at the west end of Rocky. The train is actually heading north (by the compass), but soon will make a long 150-ish degree curve toward the south and then back to the east.
