BNSF manifests on the Moffat pretty consistently depart Denver in the afternoon these days, usually getting out of town between 2pm and 4pm. This day is no exception. The Denver-Provo manifest is just west of Leyden shortly after 4pm.

In brilliant morning light, an eastbound coal train makes its way through Little Ten Curve near the west end of Rocky. If only the lead unit had flags and wings! Still, I'm not complaining with the results.

BNSF trains headed west on UP track sometimes use BNSF track between Fox Junction and Utah Junction, and at other times they will use UP track. On this October evening, the Beer Run is running on UP's main as it passes by Fox Junction.

Definitely not the best picture in the world (even as far as roster shots go), but you'll probably see why I included it right away! This is the first red and white number board that I've seen on a UP unit...

A couple of trees frame the shot of this eastbound coal load which is slowly picking up speed as it moves through Arvada. The train met a westbound at Leyden and is now headed for North Yard for a crew change.

The eastbound California Zephyr is actually running a few minutes early as it zips east past the east switch of Kremmling. During the winter months, the Zephyr often runs with only seven Superliners west of Denver due to a decrease demand in ridership.

On the approach to the east switch of Leyden, a coal empty charges west on a very pleasant Labor Day Eve. It'll be another 4-6 weeks before these trees really change colors and lose their leaves.

BNSF's daily Denver to Provo manifest works its way west through Barbara's Gulch. A fall storm moves in to the Denver area, somewhat obscuring the skyline in the distance.

Whew! Got sticky brakes!? A bit of smoke is being produced by a stuck brake on the Rocky Local as it moves down the mainline just west of Leyden. The local will take the siding at Leyden to wait on two westbounds that have yet to come out of Denver.

After pulling a string of covered hoppers from TXI Aggregates, the West Local backs across Colorado Highway 93 on its way back down to the mainline at Rocky. The last unit in the consist in a former Rio Grande GP40-2!

A single ES44AC provides a little help on the tail end of the QDVPVJ. I chose this particular angle, however, to capture not only the tail end of the train, but the clear (green over red) signal that the train has up ahead at Leyden.

BNSF's daily trackage rights manifest, which runs from Denver, CO to Provo, UT, is making its way west on the Moffat. The train has just crossed Kipling Street (back at the red intermediate) and is approaching 72nd Avenue. Note the sign that says "X" and "QZ". The "X" indicates to the crew that a grade crossing is approaching. The "QZ" indicates that the crossing is a "Quiet Zone", and that the horn should not be used (unless somebody is actually on the tracks).

A 19mm wide angle shot of the lower half of Big Ten Curve. The power for this coal empty has no trouble getting the train up and around the curve toward Clay.

Just west of the west switch of Rocky, a coal empty destined for the Energy Mine climbs up the nearly 2% grade toward Big Ten Curve and Rocky. I'm a fan of this spot as it offers a nice view of westbounds as well as the flatirons off in the distance.

A nifty telephoto trick here with the MNYRO coming through Little Ten Curve near the west end of Rocky. The hopper cars on the right are actually close to a 1/4 mile back from the lead unit of the train!
