It is getting late in the afternoon as a southbound HLAUDEN moves past the site of the Longmont Turn derailment three days earlier. Cars that could not be rerailed were pushed to the sides of the track. BNSF then laid "panel" track and got the line reopened. At this point, there is a 25 MPH slow order through the derailment site. The mountain in the distance is Longs Peak.

A look at the under belly of an SD70MAC as well as the cities of Westminster and Broomfield in the distance. The Westin hotel (on the left) stands close to Church Ranch Lake and the Front Range Sub after the tracks wrap around to the northeast.

Earlier in the morning, crews worked to vacuum up the grain from the covered hoppers and place it on tarps along the shoulder of Wadsworth Blvd. The top of a box car is just barely visible in this shot.

The derailment of the Longmont Turn could have been quite a bit worse. This is a look at the fill just north of the derailment site. Had the train made it onto this fill, cars could have rolled a lot further!

A dozen crew members meet to discuss how they are going to start on the next phase of the cleanup. A pile of lumber that has already been cleaned up rests in the foreground on the shoulder of Wadsworth.

A closer view of the front end of BNSF 8105. It appears as though there is no camera in this unit (although the camera could be in the center window). If so, that would be an interesting recording to watch.

A view of the conductors side of BNSF 8105. Train struck a tree stump on the tracks that appears to have been deliberately placed there. 18 hours after the derailment and crews were still working to get rail cars cleaned up!

BNSF got a lot of contractors on scene in a hurry to help with the cleanup effort after the Longmont Turn derailed at 10:30pm the night before. One lane of northbound Wadsworth (in the background) was closed for all the equipment.

A couple of covered hoppers "accordioned" next to each other when the Longmont Turn stuck a tree stump in the tracks. Note a few hatches opened on top of the hoppers, spilling some grain.

Once the lead units of the Longmont Turn derailed, the cars behind the units didn't have a chance! They piled up as best they could in the middle of a cut. Here is the front of the dog pile along with Omnitrax switcher OMLX 1451.

BNSF drained the diesel fuel from all four units that derailed when the Longmont Turn struck a tree stump in the tracks. The hoses are now detached as the draining is complete. Note a few wheel sets laying around.

OMLX 1451, an SW14, was being used at Coors to perform switching duties after a Coors switcher went into the shops for repair. The switcher was on its way back to Loveland on the Longmont Turn when the Turn derailed after striking an tree stump in the tracks.

BNSF 9801 rests completely on its side after a major derailment on the Front Range Sub. The Longmont Turn struck a tree stump that was believed to be put on the tracks intentionally.
