The former Rio Grande follows the Colorado River from near Granby all the way to Westwater, UT. The Zephyr emerges from Tunnel 42 right next to the Colorado in this shot, just east of Radium. Radium is a common spot for rafters to board their craft and navigate them down stream to Yarmony.

Inspiration Point is a very well-known spot for photographs along the Moffat. However, it looks a bit different at 10 o'clock at night! With no moon in the sky, the headlight is the only source of light as a westbound exists Gore Canyon and passes through Azure.

At first glance, there is nothing overly spectacular about this shot and ordinarily I wouldn't have posted it. However...note the lead swing helper. It is an SD70ACe! It is extremely rare to find an SD70ACe on a UP coal train. I had my 300mm lens on and didn't notice the unit in time to switch to my 28-135mm lens and a better roster shot.

Where's Waldo? On this particular day, he was hanging out on the side of Xcel Energy hopper XCLX 060648 through Arvada.

On September 7th, I got a picture of the Valmont coal train heading down the Front Range Sub back toward Denver. Three days later and the train had reloaded at the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch and was headed east out of Leyden. Once arriving at Utah Junction, the train will crossover from the UP Main to the BNSF Main in preparation to head north on the Front Range Sub.

Charging west through Arvada, BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest will be taking the siding at Leyden to wait for several eastbounds, including Amtrak. The fourth unit in the consist was a Santa Fe painted GP60 that will be used in Grand Junction as BNSF's local switcher.

UP's Engineering Special heads east out of Leyden under very turbulent July skies. You can see the engineers involved in the trip sitting in stadium seating, looking out the back of the train.

On the approach to the east switch of Leyden, a coal empty charges west on a very pleasant Labor Day Eve. It'll be another 4-6 weeks before these trees really change colors and lose their leaves.

A single ES44AC provides a little help on the tail end of the QDVPVJ. I chose this particular angle, however, to capture not only the tail end of the train, but the clear (green over red) signal that the train has up ahead at Leyden.

Just west of Simms Street in Arvada, CO, a UP coal load heads toward Bypass Track 2. Once there, the mid-train swing helpers will be cut out and the train will continue east toward Kansas. Sunny Sunday mornings in Colorado...doesn't get much better!

After winding through Gore Canyon, the Zephyr approaches a clear signal at the east end of the siding of Azure. This is looking down on the train from the location know as "Inspiration Point" along Grand County Road 1.

This picture may look a little bit odd; might have some pastel-type qualities to it. It took a lot of massaging in PhotoShop to get the picture into a state that was reasonably viewable! It was well past sunset at this point, and in fact twilight was nearly over. This is a UP coal train running with unit (5x2) BNSF power.

For the past few weeks, UP has been running a coal train with unit BNSF power west on the Moffat. BNSF is repaying some horsepower-miles. The train was called at 3:00pm on this day, but didn't leave North Yard until about five minutes after sunset. This shot has an interesting effect, which is the result of 1600 ISO and very little light left! The train is approaching the east switch at Leyden, where it will take the siding to meet the already-waiting Ski Train.
