It is just barely 6 o'clock in the morning as the crew on this westbound coal empty position it on the proper track before tying up and heading to Yampa for rest.

Near the east end of Phippsburg in the early dawn light, the yard is currently loaded up with a trio of trains waiting for crews. The train on the left is loaded and ready to head east while the other two will continue west to load at the mine at Energy.

At the west end of the yard, morning sun lights up two coal empties waiting to head west to load up. Not being used for much but coal trains, the weeds are starting to grow high amongst the yard tracks.

A nice overall shot of Phippsburg with a trio of trains sitting in the yard. Interesting to note that the train on the far left has three mid-train swing helpers, for a total of seven units on the train.

As a crew prepares to climb on UP 7084 and take it east, one of the two empties has also been crewed as it slowly heading west away from the camera on Yard Track 1.

Time to head east! With a fresh crew on board, this coal load pulls away from Phippsburg to start the 167 mile journey back to Denver. With the recent departure of a westbound empty, only one train will be left in the yard after this load is gone.

About ten miles east of Phippsburg, this coal load is pulling hard up the 1.8% grade on the climb to Toponas. After reaching Toponas, it is a relatively steep descent down to Bond, with the grade getting reaching 2.36%.

I love spending time in the rural high country of Colorado. You get a very relaxed feeling as you pass places like the Egeria Park Roping Club in Routt County outside Toponas. UP 7084 and train are doing that exact thing on this Sunday morning.

The sun wasn't at the best angle yet, so I settled for this artsy shot of a coal load descending through the S-Curve at the east switch of Toponas. This is one time when I wish I had a lens that could give me something between 135mm and 300mm!

I had expected to chase this train east as far as Winter Park on my journey back toward the Front Range. However, fate had other plans as the train struck some rocks near MP 147 west of Volcano. The crew was okay, but the train went on the ground and crews spent hours getting everything cleaned up.

At the crossover at Center Bond, this eastbound coal load crosses over from the main to the east siding at Bond. Here, the crew will tie the train down and get a ride to Yampa. The crew on this train is based out of Grand Junction. A Denver-based crew will take the train to Denver.

After sitting overnight, the eastbound MRONY is about to receive a fresh crew and continue east toward Denver. It'll take a while to untie the train, however, and the westbound Zephyr and a light power move will come through before the train departs.

The former Rio Grande follows the Colorado River from near Granby all the way to Westwater, UT. The Zephyr emerges from Tunnel 42 right next to the Colorado in this shot, just east of Radium. Radium is a common spot for rafters to board their craft and navigate them down stream to Yarmony.

At the west switch of Yarmony, a power move consisting of 15 engines heads west toward its crew change at Bond. The power will continue on to Glenwood Springs where it will be set out in the yard. Then, three units at a time will be added to eastbound coal loads coming from the mines in Grand Junction. Once in Denver, the units will be set out and this will happen all over again!

The afternoon clouds are starting to cause havoc at Yarmony! A westbound power move departs the west end of the block while an eastbound manifest prepares to depart out the east end in the distance.
