Moffat Tunnel (UP) Union Pacific, Rio Grande
Union Pacific has done a pretty darn good job in keeping the Heritage Unit clean (at least most of the time). It has been almost three years since UP 1989 was uncovered and it still looks as good as it did for its first run west on the Moffat.

The further west (i.e. the higher in altitude) you get, the deeper into the clouds you get! The MNYRO makes its way through a very foggy Barbara's Gulch, UP 1989 second up on the train.

The tail end of the Ski Train is disappearing into the shadows of Barbara's Gulch on its journey west. In the distance near the top of the shot, note the hopper cars at Big Ten Loop.

Got exhaust? The sun was getting low in the western sky, which really amplified the exhaust coming out of the hard-working engines! Here, they are approaching the west end of Barbara's Gulch.

A westbound coal empty, headed for the West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch. The train has six units that will be cut out in Glenwood Springs to be used as mid-train swing helpers on loaded coal trains coming east.

"Newest and New" lead up a Ballast Train at Rocky. I phrase it this way because I don't think it is fair to call an C40-8W "old" just yet! And an ES44AC definitely qualifies as "newest".

The sun is hiding behind a cloud, but the light reflects off the rails in Barbara's Gulch as a coal load makes its way east out of Rocky.

The Rocky Local throttles up as it moves west through Barbara's Gulch. The grade increases through here and a bit more power is needed to get the (rather long) local up to Rocky.

Another run for the Summer Ski Train as the train passes milepost 17. The private car with the Vista Dome - California - does not run on the train in the summer months due to the difficulties in climate control. However, note the addition of the bike car directly behind the lead units.

A coal empty with eight units (only three pulling) pulls through Barbara's Gulch about 14 miles west of North Yard. The train will set out five of the eight units at Glenwood Springs to be used as swing powers for eastbound coal loads coming out of Grand Junction. This particular coal empty, consisting of 103 empties, is heading for the mine at West Elk on the North Fork Branch.

The MNYPV-06 is just coming out of the west end of Barbara's Gulch a few hundred feet shy of the east switch of Rocky. The record-high temperatures of two days ago are now gone as rain and sleet start to fall in the area.
