A C44-9W, a snoot-nose SD40-2 and an AC4400CW work to pull a 3,000-ton ballast train west toward Tunnel One. The train (symboled the WCYBDS-18) originated in Cheyenne a few days earlier and is working to make it to Bond.

Remember BN's Trough Train? It was a coal train with five or six articulated cars. Each car was the length of 20 or so 50-foot hoppers. Each "trough" could be filled continuously with coal, making for easier loading. This ballast train applies the same concept. Each "car" is about 600 feet long, filled with ballast. This train is headed for Bond for summer maintenance duty.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
The Ski Train had a great run up the mountain on this day. The first eastbound was in between Granby and Tabernash as the train made its way up the hill. At the base of Coal Creek Canyon, the train is running on clear signals on a beautiful Colorado morning.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
On a very quiet Colorado morning, SKTX 242 leads the Ski Train west. Much of the three feet of snow that fell in a blizzard one week ago remains on the ground. The head end of the train has just crossed over CO-72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

The Ski Train rounds the curve out of Clay toward Blue Mountain on its first run of the season. Fogs rests amongst some of the shorter buildings in the Denver area in the distance.
