It is not at all uncommon to see shots taken near the intermediates west of Leyden. I decided for a slightly different perspective on this day and went about a half mile east of the intermediates to get the MNYRO-21 charging west out of Leyden. The train consisted of 74 cars and seemed to be giving the four units on the point a pretty good workout.

Tis the season for maintenance and 2008 is no exception! Here, a ballast train is working its way west toward Bond. Ballast is significantly heavier than coal; those cars weigh close to 130 tons each.

Remember BN's Trough Train? It was a coal train with five or six articulated cars. Each car was the length of 20 or so 50-foot hoppers. Each "trough" could be filled continuously with coal, making for easier loading. This ballast train applies the same concept. Each "car" is about 600 feet long, filled with ballast. This train is headed for Bond for summer maintenance duty.

A C44-9W, a snoot-nose SD40-2 and an AC4400CW work to pull a 3,000-ton ballast train west toward Tunnel One. The train (symboled the WCYBDS-18) originated in Cheyenne a few days earlier and is working to make it to Bond.
